Thread regarding Mattel Inc. layoffs

Leaving early

I’ve been at Mattel for under a year and was wondering how firm the company is when it comes to repaying sign-on bonuses. I’m realizing that this might not be the right environment for me.

They will come after you for it. No doubt. You're better off waiting to get laid off or negotiating for a signing bonus somewhere else to cover for it. But they will come for it. Might not be right away but you'll get that letter in the mail, don't you worry son.

Yeah, I'm sure the company who cares enough about wasting money to fire a bunch of people, and has a law department full of lawyers on retainer, isn't going to come after your signing bonus if you willingly violate the agreement.

Those who are convincing you otherwise just want to watch the world burn at your expense.

There has never been job security at Mattel, ever!

it would have been in writing. things like relocation costs need to be paid back. It should have been in writing as part of your offer letter. if you do need to pay it back, don't listen to the advice of just keeping the money. if it is in writing legally they can come after you and go to collections or other stuff. how long have you been in the role? can you wait it out the full year?

It was your money and still is. Keep it , they will not come after you. Ynot’s check every other Thursday is probably 10x your signing bonus. Don’t worry.

I’d say quit and just make them come after you for the money. Maybe you’ll fall through the cracks.

You deserve a lot of credit for expressing that realization! My advice is fu-k em, you are an “at will” employee, you owe them nothing. Mattel’s regular occurrence of layoffs is indicative of this policy. There is no loyalty.
