Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Will anyone be able to build a career here anymore?

It seems to me that those days are over, when people stayed here and managed to build careers. Maybe it was actually a wrong decision to be tied to one place for years, but I don't like what is happening now. This is simply no longer a place where people want to stay, nor is it a place that wants to keep talented people. Sad.

In 10 years, most of the American workers will be gig workers No benefits, no paid time off, no 401k. Just what corporate America has always wanted.

Why build a career?

The babies will just live in Mommy's basement and get a check from the Goobernment.

But who will be doling them out perticpation torphies? I guess Stinky's love notes will just have to satisfy them!

Employees are being encouraged to move the f— on after 5 years. So no! AT&T isn’t a career home!

Employees are treated like consumables instead of assets. They are kicked to the curb with little respect. All people want to be treated as someone who has value. If they continue to run the company without a soul, it will surely lead to ruin. As a prior poster said, top management has destroyed employee trust and getting it back will not be easy.

Financing a depreciating asset? You may be a new hire, but you are destined to reach the c-suite at AT&T. 😂.

not at att - been to two fourtune 500 companies since I left and totally opposite of att - they both promote people on knowledge and being able to get things done.

so answer is not at the nwo cesspool att but other companies yes.

anybody thinking of working at nwo cesspool att should run run run run far away.

No companies are geared for anyone to stay and build a career any more, that’s just not how things work now.

Modern telecom careers involve jumping around a bit and I'm very glad to be a new hire in AT&T.

The trust between T and its employees will never be rebuilt.

Companies that are run like this one do not succeed. Companies that sacrifice ethics and quality for a quick buck fail. Add to that the fiscal incompetence of driving corporate debt through the roof for half-as*ed, poorly thought out acquisitions.

But I doubt many people will cry for AT&T when this company is a history lesson of how NOT to run a business in business schools.

Its funny that AT&T has such high standards when it hires (if it hires anyone!). You need a proper 4 year degree for basically any engineering job even when it's not warranted. And the stock including dividend) has performed worse than a Bond index fund for the past 10 years; in 2020 the stock drops 30% when the market is up 20%? You're only going to be able to attract foreign nationals with the certs and a need for a green card.

You know the answer to that question. Those days are gone.

I've done it, but folks like me are the last of it (26 years).

Still here, not leaving.

Mainly because they have made it so clear that they want me to, and I won't placate them.

I make damn good money, and still have a lot of PTO even though they took 5 days from me.

I have options for healthcare insurance, so that's not going to work on me either.

Staying on the teat out of spite. Yup, that's what it's coming down to.

The decision to provide 2 weeks of pay after notification of termination for management employees is proof that you are not valued as anything more than headcount on an organization chart. If your organization is forced to cut employees, there is no longer time to find another position where you could be an asset to the company. The company may save money in the short term, but they have effectively eroded any level of trust and loyalty that career minded employees have for the company. It’s ironic that AT&T hired Steven M. R. Covey to present his Speed of Trust workshop during LWD about 5 years ago. Senior executives certainly didn’t learn anything about the Speed of Trust as it works in both directions. Just as you can build trust quickly, you can erode it just as quickly by disrespecting your employees. Best of luck to those who can stick it out. 👍

Company gets what it gives. Welcome to the days of no loyalty from either side. Company should not expect loyalty as it gives none. I'm here to bleed the company dry. I have zero sense of loyalty or obligation. Just a paycheck, nothing more. I do the bare minimum. That's all they deserve out of me.

You are so correct, I enjoyed my Career here until about 5 or so years ago, the new leadership believes they no longer have to build or value talent, they believe the BS some consulting firms give them that they can meet all the staffing needs for much less dollars or commitment. This model will not survive long, but by the time new leadership comes in to make the changes they will have lost the expertise that was built here. The latest Pension change will have alot of Senior engineers leaving in 2021, I am not impacted by that change but realize when decisions like that are made its time to get out!
