Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

And here I thought grown-up leadership went extinct

“By far the hottest topic in leadership strategy today is whether AI should be used to improve efficiency by cutting jobs or by increasing outputs.

For some, the choice between approaches is obvious.

“I would double my output in a heartbeat,” Jim Kaskade, CEO of Conversica, which focuses on conversation automation solutions, noted during a chat about views on the replace vs. augment debate and more.

“Cutting staff is just a band-aid for companies that haven’t built their businesses carefully. CEOs that have a sustainable relationship with growth will hold on to their staff even tighter once AI empowers them to do more,” Jim added.”

Exactly! When I joined this company almost a decade ago, one phrase that was drilled into my head was "Our people are our biggest competitive advantage."

And then, when I moved "up the ladder" and moved to a new state for a new role, I heard the same thing during my 2 month training: "Our people are our biggest competitive advantage."

Well, since the pandemic I have seen that the executives have turned their back on that mission statement. They started by taking small creature comforts in our office (for example, they banned any office "plants" real or artificial, And then they sent a memo telling us we were no longer "team members' but we were now instead "employees".

When team members expressed their concern at the change in language in the company handbook, the executives waved away our concerns by saying "some of our 3rd party vendors who provide HR-related services asked us to change it for clarity". What a load of BS

The last 4 years have rapidly gone downhill in regard to how team members are treated, meanwhile we get to sit on all -hands calls where Michael Grossberg tells us how awesome the last senior leadership retreat was, and how they took charter buses from the airports and had a steak dinner the first night. All while team members are scrambling to figure out their next move after they get laid off.

We don't need no unions. Union people are communists.

And what do you think Kerrins would do with more time? New Dance moves ? More Lemons? More boondoggle vacations, Mess up some other part of the bank? Pander for more meaningless awards? Embarrass herself on stage with more capable women and men? Outsource more jobs?
Can AI just replace her? We may be better off.

I would rather AI be the path forward vs. outsourcing menial tasks that AI could easily do.

It’s time to unionize Wells. The ‘leaders’ have proven they are incapable of doing what is right for their employees, their biggest asset. They kowtow to shareholders.
I’ve been against unions for many years but it’s time for them to come back.

One key fact: Wells Fargo has not grown via its product offering for decades now. It was a well-known secret within the bank that all growth was from M&A activities. Thus, the only course they have at the moment is cutting.

Those are all small companies that aren't public listed.

CEOs today work in the short term qtr to qtr. They have shareholders to answer to. Not saying it's right, but it's the way it is. The other thing is expenses are much easier to control than revenue.

The biggest thing in the next 5 years is to learn AI. "the pace of commitment and execution will be key". You will either know AI and have a job or be faced with the luck of the draw. I realize that Wells is always 10-15 years behind in tech. So I am sure that all the tech does not use AI. I was told not to use it 3 years ago, before I was laid off, when I asked my manager if I could use it to re-engineer the app I was converting to the cloud.
The recommendation is for everyone to "quiet quit", upskill, learn AI prompting, use in coding, design, specification, AI frameworks, use of AI in job searching, employee retention, self management etc. The job market is evolving.
