Thread regarding USAA layoffs

Do they want to get remote workers out?

Had a talk with manager and told that there's no opportunity for advancement. I also got a lower rating than I normally would. I'm working 50+ hour weeks and have been here for 10+ years, but that doesn't matter since I'm remote.

It's insulting and degrading to have a lower rating and be working nonstop and also training junior employees. It's not officially in the system, but based on the mid-review, I'd be a low meets at final year review.

This seems out of character, so I was wondering if they're trying to get remote workers to leave/suppress careers until the only focus is San Antonio.

Your mistake is working 50+ hours a week. Even if you got a promotion, how much more do you think they’d offer? 5-10% at the most. Is that worth giving up those extra hours of your life? Imagine being able to put those 10 hours into learning a new skill, or adding a certification that could make you more valuable elsewhere.

I’m speaking from experience. I regularly put in 10-20 extra hours a week in an IT Security area. All it got me was pats on the back, assigned the work of lazier people, and one promotion that came with only a 5% bonus.

Never again. Left late last year and making 22% more salary, unlimited PTO, and 100% remote. Get out while you can o if you stay, do the bare minimum to remain employed. Good luck!

I am remote. Have been for decades. Su-ks thinks ate moving in this direction, but the best thing to do to stay remote is work for yourself. I am working on that now and once the profits are there I will be gone.

Sorry you got laid off but its delusion to think you can stay somewhere on your terms indefinately. These corporations dont give 2 chits about you, to them you are a cost.

I was laid off as remote recently. They want all non-hybrid employees out. It’s incredibly sad. I planned on finishing my career with USAA and that’s obviously not possible.

Not great to hear if you’re remote because of a medical JAR. I know several people who were laid off in both rounds who were in the same position. One was up for a promotion at the end of last year… obviously that didn’t happen.

They've already specifically stated remote workers will no longer be considered for promotions or internal transfers. Hopefully its just to get some folks out and they'll revert that once the dust settles from the great Wayne purge of 2023

I left a month ago as a remote employee, saw the writing on the wall. Just in the tone from the top alone, it's offensive.

Sounds like it’s pretty clear. If you are remote, start applying while you have a job.

My manager had the same conversation with me, saying that they were going to indicate it as on track currently but that I'd need to pick it up if I want to meet criteria at end of year.

This after last year's review was scaled down to meets when they promoted me and decided to retroactively rate my previous year under my new role criteria.

Whatever it takes to sc--w an employee!

How are you seeing your rating? Mine only has on track or not...

Yes, it is pretty clear. Can’t move up or even other jobs within the company. Remote workers are stuck. And I also noticed it hit performance review. I got a “meets” despite always having an exceeds previously. Work ethic didn’t change and the manager even noted I led the team in all areas during the mid-year. If you need a sign as a remote employee whether you should stay or not, there are many signs now. I know I’m not sticking around.

Think about it; if you are the only game in town, you set the rules. If you have to be in SA, where there are very few other large employers, then you have to follow the whims of the CEO because you don’t have any (or very few) other choices. RTO is all about removing or limiting options.

I am 100% remote and I just had my mid-year yesterday and I was a meets. He said I am one of the top performers on the team, but at the end of the day that’s not going to matter if they want try and get remote workers out. I don’t think I’ll be around in 1-2 years.
