When I hear “location strategy”, my blood pressure goes up

I feel like an office chair or a table which can be tossed around or thrown away.

Location strategy is real and coming to every team at the bank. This is an industry trend, reduce footprint and consolidate. I agree with the thought that they can easily replace you for cheaper across the globe in India or hire someone cheaper here. Jobs are scarce so for every job posting there'll be 100 folks lined up. Employer has upper hand during this period, survive for as long as you can or move on to a better opportunity, which is rare. Look forward to a paycut and live below your means.

I wouldn't take a layoff personally, it's business and that S goes both ways. What I do take personally is Hudson Yards intentionally tormenting employees to weasel out of paying severance, which is THEIR policy. That's not business, it's just being a D. If they don't like their severance plan, they can change it. There's no reason, outside of failed leadership, to spend all this time, money, and effort to F with the workers that bring in all the profits.

When I got here, not long before the pandemic, there were just handful of offices we had to work out of, all of which I’ve seen on the lists “hubs” people have listed as part of location strategy. Only exception were the few full remote people, and I think post-pandemic they got pulled back in with RTO as the excuse. That’s probably why I don’t hear people talk about it, it already happened to us before I even got here.

I've been remote for 18 years and now I'm being told I cannot perform my job without the luxury of a cube and fluorescent lights. This has nothing to do with 'collaboration'.

List of team members to be laid off may not be dynamically picked up every week. So someone ( probably a group) is assigned to this task with top management oversight. They would have this list for 2024 already and working to inform the state ( if mandated). I have gone through 3+ layoff before in my 40+ years . They schedule this in every quarter for various reasons that include get a appreciation from stock market. So be patient and it is the way the employers ( top folks) take a ride on employee for staying longer. Location strategy is just gimmick , there are other factors that includes that your role is obsolete, your role is seasonal like compliance , your manager is simply sleeping without projecting their contribution, you have competitor that can do your task for less money ( include outsourcing) and finally without any valid reason just to show the layoff numbers per location to get big bonus.
Good luck . With existing layoff data ( if you have access to it), you predict your chances. But would be difficult.

7 layers of management everywhere. We need to cut easily 2 or 3 layers across the board. Won't miss a beat and the work flow will dramatically improve.

Location couldn't be any less relevant. Shart does not give even the tinniest of $hi!s about where you work, he just wants you to quit so he doesn't have to pay you severance. That's all that it's about, and all it's ever been about. Same with RTO. Same with ratings BS. Same with garbage raises. Same with everything else that Hudson Yards does. There is one objective, and one objective only, getting you to quit.

Wells Fargo never promised you a job at your location forever. They spell out clearly in the benefits book what happens if your work location changes. You should be mad at yourself for expecting something never promised to you.

Are you dense? People aren’t mad they have to RTO due to location/hub strategy. They’re mad they have to move their families, often across the country, for a job they’ve successfully performed for years.

I know. I know. You’ve “proven” Bla Bla Bla. But guess what? Nobody cares. When you have a job, going to work is part of it.

Wanna stay home? Don’t worry, you’ll have plenty of opportunity to do just that soon enough.

Like all "company wide" initiatives, there's exceptions. Just like RTO. Both are displacement strategies. They use them as an excuse to fire who they want. Not that they need an excuse legally, it's all PR really, with politicians, regulators, employees and customers as the intended audiences.

I'm not in Tech. But, location strategy is definitely a thing in my department. I believe it is a company wide strategy. If you haven't heard of it then it probably hasn't affected you personally but I bet there are folks in your department who have been or will be affected by it.

I don’t think I’ve ever actually heard “location strategy” at work, just see it on this board. We pretty much already were only located at the major hubs before I got here though, so maybe that’s why?

Or is it really just a tech thing? Seems like people in tech make up a disproportionate amount of the posting on here.
