Are Telecoms just the business of connecting consumers, equipment and business entities which means it's a business of "d-mb pipes" and "wires", or is it something more.

Do you know what a "Telecom" is? It's a loosely defined term these days. Lumen wants to be a Carrier because that's what they know how to do, but now Kate wants it to be a "Technology" company. Technology and Telecom are not Carrier. Lumen is more like ant in the jungle not really knowing which way to go. Lumen cannot be a "Technology" company, it has to pick between Carrier or Telecom. Lumen would be very stoopid to not choose Carrier in a tech age that is highly controlled by Google, Microsoft, and Amazon.
" There are no new products in telecom only different ways to deliver them. "
You mean since cellphones, computers, and the long distance walkie talkie that Sprint, streaming, etc. introduced to businesses. Your point is valid and interestingly enough, brings forth a worthy topic to be discussed.

Lay your feelings aside for a moment and look at the transformation in the space in the
last 25 years. No, the changes were not wrought by the bells, but going forward, with
the right vision or optics to see potential in a new product or service, would not this
alter the course of a conduit provider.
Just like content made Netflix, etc. if you find a way to bring better organization to complexity, you find ways to make things defer to you. This is the key
( A simple concept )
We are also losing some very big customers will be interesting how it reflects on quarter numbers
