Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

DTV is T's crown jewel

Consider the reasons why T might not want to sell DTV just yet:

Directv makes up almost 90% of current T video subscribers (17 million out of about 19 million combined)
ATTTV is essentially the same service as DTV, except it requires a fiber connection which isn't available in most of the nation.
U-verse is no longer taking new subs
HBO Max is less than impressive and over-priced
Warner Media is the big debt load at this point, not DTV
Taking all that into account, selling DTV would essentially mean T is getting out of the video business. Which is clearly not the case. And the reduction of debt load by eliminating DTV would backfire, as it is the main revenue stream for T's video segment.

So, selling it doesn't reduce debt; eliminates a steady and significant source of video revenue, and leaves T without a meaningful video service.

Perhaps when (or if) T ever expands fiber into more of the nation - including NY and LA (which don't have significant fiber penetration) - selling DTV would make sense. But now it's just the fantasy of addled minds who clearly aren't really aware of reality.

So, again, what logic is there in selling off DTV? They would get hardly any debt relief as

@2stf+16emkQv8 clearly you have zero experience with wireless, much less 5G.

Could this be used for video as well? Maybe Amazon takes a few billion out of it's back pocket for dtv, but not yet. Mostly for advertising $$$.

AT&T lost 900,000 tv customers this yeAt so far. DTV is not profitable. Everyone in business outside of AT&T is saying AT&T should sell it off to drastically reduce its debt. Contractors barely have work for it let alone the prem techs. The NFL is looming to end its partnership with DirecTV so that way Sunday ticket can be used by multiple companies and platforms. You truly are delusional. Mobility makes far more then DirecTV. AT&T TV needs a minimum of 20-25 mbps to function so it doesn’t need fiber. Does Netflix require fiber? Did DirecTV now ? No. “What you have just said is one of the most insanely id–tic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it.”

DTV is no longer a viable business and it is using an antiquated technology - I considered it just a piece junk to be trashed and quickly before it does more harm to AT&T. Jail stankey for the $hitty acquisition

If DTV is so great, why did AT&T stop marketing them? They drastically want to dump them, but they only have 1 buyer (Dish). Because of this, Dish wants them for very low price. DTV losing millions of subs a year. Eventually, operating costs will eat up dwindling revenue. Things will get even worse once DTV loses NFL package. AT&T in a horrible position.

@1lne - typical T arrogance that the network is king.

According to AT&T’s earnings reports, “premium video” (a.k.a. DIRECTV) has more than twice as much ARPU (average revenue per user) than wireless or broadband. From the 2Q 2020 report that just came out:
Premium Video ARPU - $124.98
Postpaid Phone ARPU - $54.47
IP Broadband ARPU - $51.61

Translation for the cheap seats: AT&T makes more than twice as much off each DIRECTV customer than it does off a broadband or wireless phone customer. But when you actively drive away millions of customers from a platform that makes you a lot of money, you make less money.

ATTTTV works just fine on copper pair. Getting customers to buy it, that's another story.

I saw a moderate amount of ATTTTV boxes on my internet installs when it first came out, but lately ATTTTTV orders have dwindled to almost nothing.

ATTTTTV seems to quickly be going the way of the Dodo Bird and Digital Life. And now with Uverse sales stopped, DTV bleeding customers at a frightful pace, and next to no one geting HBO Max, I wonder what Stankey's next big shiny thing will be?

DirecTV may be losing subscribers at a much faster rate than its peers but the service still helped deliver nearly $7 billion in video revenues during the second quarter, a significant piece of AT&T’s nearly $41 billion in total operating revenues.

Our area's DTV customer have dwindled down to mostly 85 year old widows and farm worker families. Hardly a growth industry.

ATTV doesn’t require a fiber connection. It’s doesn’t even require AT&T internet. It just needs a internet connection.

T only cares about the perception of being an entertainment company to its shareholders. The revenue coming in is just gravy. Showing sub adds is what T wants. And they're not showing any. They're cooking the books by adding HBO Max subscribers but in all reality, they're just making retail reps set up free accounts which shows growth. I would love to know the actual data transmission stats for HBO Max.
