Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

Left Chevron to Join XOM....best decision of my life

Straight to the point......last year i left Chevron upstream to join XOM upstream company in the Permian. Prior to this....i have a 27+ year career with Chevron....throughout which i climbed up from being a Drilling Engineer to all the way being an Asset Manager.

The pay at Exxon is easily 25-30% higher than what i got at Chevron (and yes i have direct reports at Exxon and have accessed their salaries too and i can confirm that they make 20-25% more than all the direct reports i had at Chevron). I wasted my career working for Chevron...........and i want to make sure you folks dont make the same mistake....join XOM its not too late...leave this dumpster fire.

Worked for CVX and worked for XOM. CVX is better in salary, bonuses, 9/80, ranking, and career moves. XOM is an opaque black hole unless you play golf or go fishing with your boss every weekend.

we are exxonmobil is equal to my a$$ nowadays, it stinks.

Why don’t you tell the people of Chevron the raises XOM got this year??
People will be happy that they are not at XOM

That is a good summary. It is fun until it is not.

I was a golden boy then ticked off the wrong people and zero career advancements. I will always recall a manager being an on purpose a--hole to me when I dared to question why he thought i would be a good fit for the objectively terrible fit of a job he put me in. It was not the fact he said "I am the boss and I have to make tough decisions" it was the fact he laughed at me for thinking I had any input on my career.

I will say recently it has felt simikar at cvx. But at least my boss is a nice guy that doesnt laugh in my face.

XOM in the petro-tech space is very in your face competitive, in an always "watch your back" kind of way you need to butter up those above and crush the competition. With forced ranking and continuous layoffs of the bottom ranked 10% and all the political infighting that entails. Find a power group and align with their push against competing groups, and your life may be good. Some people thrive in that environment, whereas others find it toxic. If you are happy with the switch to XOM then good for you, but it is not for everyone. I never worked in XOM but know lots of folks that do and certainly have had to deal with my share of folks trained by XOM to be a$$holes both as a consultant and more recently with XOM transfers within Chevron. Report back in 5 years: That will be the real test of your happy switch, rather than your perceived short-term pay raise.

XOM is very straightforward. Either you fit the mold or you have no career. While they supposedly cull the bottom 10% every year they did a stealth layoff in 2020, read their board.

It is better if you fit the mold. But if not I can say it stinks.

All those years of progress and advancement and you never learned proper English spelling and punctuation?
Cool Story Bro. Agree with the first response below, Prove it.
I can't believe more people haven't called out this fascinating piece of Hollywood fiction.

And their CEO is unapologetic about drilling and producing oil and gas. Hear his speech that blew everyone’s mind. Sharp dude,
They don’t lay-off, they get rid of bottom 15 every year, so it’s dog eat dog world.

I've heard the work environment is toxic at XOM. So much unpaid OT that people have health issues due to the stress.

@1jlk XOM has a pension that is arguably better than CVX. They match 7% for 401k.

The difference is their base wage is higher, as XOM does not pay bonuses to the regular level employees, only to executives.

OP, the only trouble is that at Exxon (like Chevron), external hires are viewed with a degree of suspicion, you better perform there or you'll be at the top of their layoff list.

Does Exxon Pay a Lump Sum Payout like Chevron, or a retirement annuity if you decide? Do all the Oil Companies pay a pension on top of your 401K with 8% match as well? Asking 4 a Stop and Rob Clerk. 😐

Exxon pays the best because they only hire the best. No B students at Exxon.

OP is partly correct. Base pay in Exxon is 20-25% higher, but Exxon does not pay bonuses. Getting to PSG 24 and up on good CIP years will put us ahead.

FWIW about a decade ago I did the reverse. Was the best decision of my career witha 30% plus increase when including bonus. Also got out of toxic XOM culture.

So to each his own. I wilm say some thrived at XOM, not me.
