Thread regarding Cigna layoffs

If you don't use enough AI tokens, you will be laid off

This might only apply to software engineering, or even certain departments, it's hard to be sure.

But if you're using any of the AI tools, especially Cursor, they come with dashboards to tell management how tokens you're using, how much of your code is AI written, etc.

They are monitoring this at the Sr Director level and above.

I'm already hearing stories of managers and directors being forced to justify to their bosses why they should keep otherwise good employees who's token usage isn't high.

Of course, Cigna has to pay for the tokens. The AI companies have us (and most of the industry) convinced we need to give them as much money as possible by using as many tokens as possible. It's as ridiculous as a for-profit electric company convincing you to waste electricity.

I think most of the managers know how d-mb this is. But it's not like managers and directors aren't also being let go. Even if they think this is d-mb, your manager is going to go along with it.. They already gave rid of the ones who wouldn't.

That's not to say there aren't still some good managers taking care of their employees as well as they can given the circumstances.

For example, if someone gives you training, or has to learn something new, and then you get laid off, you might think that was d-mb and a waste of company resources. Sometimes that is a case of the right hand not knowing what the left hand is doing. But sometimes that's your manager doing what they can give you the skills they think you'll need in your next job after they're forced to lay you off.

@162

Rebel? Not really.

Just not going to play bullsh-t games, save screenshots, "network with your verticals and business partners" (the bootlicking in that phrase is vomit-worthy) in the hopes that I get spared for the next round.

You are free to hope for whatever gets your impotent little brain through another day. Don't be too sad if it doesn't pan out. It rarely does for lapdogs like you.

In the meantime, how about you take a remedial "Align to One" session? It doesn't seem like you are living the values. I'd hate for you to be laid off. 😆

"All I can advise is continuing the use of AI wherever you can--because it really is great if applied correctly-- and take screencap backups of your prompt histories.

Networking with your verticals and business partners always helps too."

Yeah, I won't be doing any of that. Let the chips fall where they may...

Correction, they now refer to themselves as AIEO. As in AI Enablement Office. It's a hilarious self reflection that they sure as heck aren't a center of excellence. Even "enablement" is a stretch if you've ever gone through the process. I'm waiting for it to eventually just get renamed to AIO .. AI Office ... At least then you dont have to live up to any verbs

SWE here -- Our director has been fully transparent with us about the Enterprise tracking our token usage and we have seen inconsistencies with the reports. All we could conclude is that the dashboard is vibe coded (ofc), and just as messed up (no surprise) as the people in charge.

All I can advise is continuing the use of AI wherever you can--because it really is great if applied correctly-- and take screencap backups of your prompt histories.

Networking with your verticals and business partners always helps too.

@ma Aren’t we on the 5th version of the AI CoE with the same executive sponsor? It’s a joke.

I hate to say it, but I'm in the AI CoE and am actively looking for an out. Previous commenter about lack of strategy is spot on. All my work keeps getting shifted to lower cost resources and the writing is on the wall that they are just looking for people to do the work, and not have a coherent mindset to challenge.

The amount of things we have started to bring forward, only to change paths over and over is ki-ling us.

P.s. the reason you don't see token dashboards is because we are constantly changing our strategy for coding agents... We can't keep up!!!!!

@kd Yes, in this case these so called leaders will fail because they are neither strategic nor careful.

@k7 not if managed correctly but have to be strategic or it will if not careful…

The tokens are going to cost more than the amount it would have been to pay actually live employees.

But because the post 2008 leaders are total narcissists we won't find that out until later when their short sighted AI strategy fails.

Tell your bosses to stop listening to the chaos that is the AI office. Especially JD and his crew of the young and the misguided

I'm in IT, in my area, we're given access to claude but there really wasn't much of a emphasis on token usage. Also we're pretty limited with tokens so sometimes we're throttled using opus and have to use a different model like sonnet. They even told us to use cheaper models for more basic tasks so we don't blow through tokens.
