Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

This is what can happen...

Got 3% raise in March, something I was not expecting.

Got excellent feedback from KOs - knowledgeable others.

Supervisor thanked me for hard work and doing such a great job and getting fantastic feedback.

In July, the same supervisor told me I was in the bottom and had to take PIP.

In 3 weeks time, the time given to decide, I chose to take 3 month pay and left in 2 days.

Found a new job, very happy in 2 weeks and there was no looking back.

The coldness, the arrogance, the heartlessness, the abruptness, the betrayal and the dishonesty are all unthinkable and unimaginable.

It reminded me of the mentally ill person Ted Bundy - he had no understanding of the pain he was causing to his victims. And this is how the ExxonMobil managers are - they are not physical k–lers, I am not saying that, but they have no clue how cold and heartless their behavior is.

For a week I could not sleep. I felt chest pain and felt ill.

But I survived and now I am actually happy this happened.

Without PID I might be still stuck at ExxonMobil.

I took a 10% pay cut overall, but this is not bad and well worth the better newer environment.

@1hof+17zxzqJQ Your experience is quite common. Easier to NSI someone who has transferred to another role so new group has to deliver message and deal with being down a person on headcount while still doing same amount of work. I’ve seen people sold to the new group as the best person in their group, hate to see them go, etc so the new org will take them only to NSI them once they move. Company loses as well because they pay relocation if it is a location move and then immediately lose the person. There ought to be a rule you can’t move NSI people.

Similar experience with me except I gave PIP a try for a while before walking out. I moved groups late last year and rumor is the last group threw me under the bus because it was easier for them.
Will claim my pension payments when needed but life is much better and calmer now.

So how many others got the surprise PIPoff after being dropped multiple quintiles from historic placement? Removing the 19% max drop cap was much more devastating than the 3% to 8% target. It meant for those with the misfortune to be working for a s***ty supervisor at the wrong time, they could experience a long career of good work and high rankings undone with one stoke of the axe. It has always been critical at EM to have the right coattails to catch onto, but now it’s the difference between continuing employment and a boot out the door.

What? No. Covid reduced demand for O&G products causing excess crude production. Russia-Saudi disagreed on how much crude production to cut to stabilize. Their dispute is directly caused by covid.

Are you one of those id–ts that believes covid is imaginary?

OP - your story is detailed and optimistic.
I expect most people forced into the better world will agree.

so you are saying:
Covid was a Russia/Saudi/US move to shift oil prices and gain respect.
Anything could happen.

Speaking of winners - it's those 2 buttons to get you to the f0x channel.
But why the remote on another channel when you get home?
Better lock it up. Chastity belt.

25% drop in stock price - Jan 1 - Feb 25.
My pub closed - Mar 15.

It was common knowledge months back that the lowest bucket shifted from 3 to 8%. The notice to supervisors was widely distributed on this site. The 3% was communicted to us employees from our supervisors to be more transparent in how the new assessment cycle would work.

Covid started worldwide oil demand reductions in January/Feb with many people fearing travel And full city lockdowns began in China. Saudi/Russia disagreed over how much to cut in response and conflict arose/flooded market in march. Id argue that covid was the root cause for the Saudi/Russia oil war.

All of you are not alone! 20 YOS. Been Pipped after moving from FFX. Wife and kids hated the move and now we are divorced. Housing mkt in HOU s—s so lost over 100K on the house. Should have exercised my options whilst in DC as this relocation is by far the worst ever!

This thread has several responders that were in the 'assessment meetings'.
Looking into the human impact of the July 'Layoff' maybe. Remorse maybe.
Or concerned and watching for the later assessments.
They were not invited to those.

You snivelling buffoon.
What room were you in Feb when 3% was announced, only to be changed to 8 later?
What room were you in, zombie?

BTW - the russian/arabia pizzle had bigger impact than covid.
In full play prior to your 'first' meeting.

Even low performers have been given raises. Theirs would be every few years

i was in the assessment meetings.you likely did get good feedback and you were likely initially assessed as Good or maybe Very Good. the problem is when we went in the room it shifted from absolute assessment to relative assessment with a forced high portion of NI and NSI. so the bottom fell out. the discussions were not easy and yes i had to ‘own’ the result but my point is that the result was likely as much a surprise to your manager than it was to you. people fought very hard for their own. none of this is meant as an excuse, the whole thing is sad.

Is there a minimum ranking to below which no raises are given? I have heard no raises for bottom 20% If so, would give you an idea how far you fell in ranking this year.

I've been ranked very well my entire career. Only got a 3% raise this year. Notified of raise prior to Coronavirus lockdowns at end of March. Any raises gained this year were based on previous years performance.

You mo–n, exxonmobil has had the piping process for years and years prior to 2020. The new process was presented in early February as a 3% NSI bucket. AFTER covid hit, it was adjusted to 8%.

I can say for a 100% fact that the 2020 ranking cycle raises were going to be the 2021 raises. The 2020 raises were from 2019 or 2018 performance based on your ranking.

Just to be clear.
The Pipping process - and the percentages - was planned BEFORE Covid or Russia/SA issues.
It was in the works when you got your 3% raise.

No one has gotten a raise from 2020 ranking cycle. Any raises during this year would have been from prior year performance. The new system this year would have done raises for everyone January 2021.

In same boat, and EMpathetic. Onward through the fog!

You mention Ted Bundy. His last interview before execution had him crying with remorse and plausibly pointing to p–nography addiction as part of the cause.

You won't see any EM Mgr/Supv crying with remorse for what they've done.
and the only addiction is the reason they got where they are.
The mirror.

To all, Pls know this.... there was more to the PIP than you realize. Don’t focus on being poor performer even though you were told that. For alot of people on PIP it was “they will survive and land on their feet” because they are a good performer. Maybe you saved someone else who won’t make it outside XOM. Also the raises are not necessarily ties to rank. Someone can be at top of band and salary limit and not get huge raise. So much more goes into this also

@ OP+17zxzqJQ I ranked pretty good and I got a 5.8% raise. That sounds accurate to get 3% for a low ranked employee.

@myo+17zxzqJQ absolute nonsense. You are lying or a troll. The average salary escalation planning factor for that year was actually right at 3%.

Your manager didnt have the spine to tell you that you didnt rank well. A 1 - 3% raise was typical for bottom 3rd that year. If you ranked well you would have got 6 - 15%.

Without being PIPed or a being a low performer, I quit at will many years ago due to an unproductive overall culture and bad work environment. I took 30% pay cut (yes it is true) which was a difficult decision to make at that time specially when EM was sort of still flying high for outsiders.

I took a job that still has an excellent pay but most importantly offers me what I wanted to do with my life. I am ridiculously happy and now have a clear path — if I work hard and contribute based on core values and be productive – I will be rewarded – there are no more middlemen, BS artists and useless managers that suppress real talents.

Managers like to avoid difficult discussions, so most people hear "you did good" blah blah regardless of ranking.

Problem is, they owe you an honest discussion of how your performance stacks up, and if on low end, what you can do to improve, especially when layoffs are coming.

Takes a good manager that really cares about his people to address difficult personnel topics with you, and those are rare.

Sad thing is that when the managers that won't normally level with you are forced to because you are getting PiP, they often get defensive and act incredulous that you are surprised. Manager was upset with me because I felt blindsided, but that was really his fault, not mine.

Honesty is tough for some, and those that can't handle it should not be in a supervisor or manager position to begin with.

Never for a minute think upper management at EM cares about you or can be trusted. I sold the majority of my EM stock last time it hit 80 in my 401k account. I retired at 55 in May because after 30 yrs I could tell it was time to leave the toxic environment at EM. I am still p-ss-d they refused my retirement dinner which is in writing that you get. They refused because of the cost

I left with the PiL in July when informed I was in the bottom 8%.

Ironically, last month they sent me a plaque for winning a 2019 Global Technology Award (Chemicals). The plaque reads "In recognition of accomplishments far exceeding company expectations".

3% raise was for inflation from 2019 or 2018 ranking. Nothing special and very minimal actually. Employee raises are on a schedule based on how you rank (low performers can get 1.5~2 yrs between raises). To summarize, the raise had nothing to do with this years cycle. It was already planned prior to covid.

Yes, I think it was a wtf moment for a lot of us. I was told I did an excellent job by the manager and my manager was super impressed with the KO feedback... few weeks later PIP. It literally felt so deceiving and like ExxonMobil is a complete cheat. I felt like this whole stuff about deceiving the public and all the lawsuits might have two sides. I know for sure now Exxonmobil is completely and inarguably capable of deceit, lying in your face, having no ethics, fraud etc. I think a lot of us would be willing to stand in court at one of these huge lawsuits and say it like it is.
