Thread regarding Seagate Technology Inc. layoffs

I'm still grateful to work here

This is not a perfect job by far but it's something that's providing me with a steady pay and at least some benefits when so many around me are not that lucky. Those of you who keep complaining about the company should really think about that once in a while...

I remember the days when Seagate was an incredible place to work. I loved those days and the memories of those days are still etched in my mind. All good things must come to an end as did my employment. I carried the positive attitude into another venture and I feel that I have succeeded adding value and providing solutions to my new customers. So be positive and carry on! do what's right and nature will reward you. Stay away from negative thoughts and negative people, if you let them get to you then they will stain all your experiences with their colors.

@fice - Any major industry eventually reduces to a handful of relatively large players. How many PC makers were there in 1995 compared to today?

Look at what we've acquired as various strategies: Dothill, Xyratex, etc. that were direct competition with our customers. We bought Samsung, which worked out well for 2 years or so, then not so much. We didn't see the rise of SSDs. We bought Maxtor for some reason when they were about ready to go belly-up.

These were strategic lapses. The good thing these days is we rely WAY less on the consumer market now. Business spend wasn't as dramatically affected by the pandemic as consumer spend.

A lot has just been being a technology whose growth will be limited going forward, but there have been some major unforced errors in the overall direction of the company.

Many of the complaints posted are true. There have been countless RIFs over the years. Some major, others very selective.  Many great engineers have been RIF'd because the work they were doing was no longer valued.  It feels a bit like musical chairs.  If you have a seat when the music stops, you get to keep your job.

That said, I too feel lucky to be working.  We are suffering the effects of a once in a century pandemic.  Millions of people are out of work and suffering.  And I get to do interesting work with brilliant people.  I do feel lucky.

Yes, there is no job security. But that is a true everywhere. I could leave Seagate today, only to be laid off tomorrow at my new job.

We can all blame management.  They are an easy target for anger and resentment. But let's face it. We work in a cut throat business.  Check out the carnage:

The issues around job insecurity are not unique to Seagate. They are a fact of life.

Thanks for checking in Dave.

"Deserved their fate"? They've shed well over half of US IT and probably well over 20% of total staff in the US over the past 6-7 years.

I'm sure they all deserved it. Love the attitude.

@4amt+19kUe9yh.People have a right to complain. If you are employed by Seagate for the last 30 years then you must be management or higher up.Im betting than you come on this layoff sight and down vote any negative comments because your life is so fxxking sh1t.
If an employee is overworked, underpaid and treated like a machine and not a person they have every right to complain. It shows what a self righteous obnoxious piece of sh1t that you are if your opinion is that if a person complains then they are worthless. You epitomise everything that is wrong with seagate management. That attitude that you take is why people complain.

4amt - Yeah, predictable response. You are cruising this layoff site on a Friday night. You must be lonely.

Count me as another who is employed and satisfied going three decades now. I have earned every high mark on my performance appraisal and never felt the need to s— up to any management for those marks. I'm sure I'll be denigrated as old and entitled, go for it. My long experience are those who complain the loudest are the most worthless and deserve their fate. Either step up or quit.

@1hoq+19kUe9yh What's that got to do with the original post?

Looks like the OP wrote that while they were in work. "I'm still grateful to work here". Someone is butt hurt that the company is aware that people are writing negative things.

@OP+19kUe9yh... f##k off.Grateful for what? Working for vindictive people? Working for a company that has a history of treating its employees like dirt?
Can I ask you where do you work?

Don't just sit and be grateful though. This is a war on you, the middle class person. 1. Save 50% of your income immediately. Cut costs and sell down your stuff as needed. Start NOW. Don't buy a $7 cup of coffee ever. 2. Acquire certifications and or other retraining credits. Better if you get Seagate to pay for it. Start looking into this immediately as a priority over your actual job. 3. Fully update your resume and LinkedIn and keep it so in order to hit the ground running. 4. Take advantage of the career discovery site to cross train in other projects if possible. 5. Improve diet and exercise. You will be more hirable if you look less fat, weak, or sickly. Just a fact, not judging. 6. Research jobs at other companies. You might find out you are paid well right where you are. 7. Do what Elon Musk is doing by diversifying more into crypto, gold, silver, etc to prep for inflation. 8.
Stop playing all video games and never smoke pot or other d–gs. 9. Acquire or keep a good spouse who provides another income stream. 10. Nobody is coming to save you but you! Never sit on your a– too long not advancing some aspect of yourself. If you don't take a war mentality about it in these times, you will likely end up a victim like the others you know.

Idk - There wasn't any "stench" on my resume coming from Seagate, but I was in IT and not engineering. It was good timing I got let summer 2019 and not in Covid times.

Other than the constant fear of layoffs inspired by the CIO RIF'ing people 8 out 10 years, there were other positives. The people left bonded out of common trauma of watching friends get walked out the door 4 out of every 5 years. The benefits are good. The pay is above average. The first and second level managers are pretty good. Above that, it's pretty much an inside club of sycophants. The layoff package has tended to be pretty generous over the years. I was around long enough to get 2 weeks per year.

In these times, yeah, be grateful for your job, but keep your skills translatable to some other industry. One thing made clear the past 10+ years is upper management thinks there isn't a financial mess a good round of RIFs can't solve.

Looks like someone has bought into the corporate misinformation program. Come back to this board when you are RIF'd and out looking for work with the stench of stx on your resume.
