Thread regarding ConocoPhillips layoffs

I can't take much more of this soul-crushing job

Every single day here drains me a little more. It's all about too much work, not enough pay, toxic environment, and constant layoffs. Been quietly applying elsewhere for months and finally got a couple interviews lined up. Fingers crossed I can escape this toxic grind soon.

@1fn+1jv2sm9na Great point. You can work in finance here and not know two licks about oil production or how we even get it out of the ground. In that case, you are just a cog in a wheel not understanding what the big picture is. Or you can be closer to wellhead and have a decent track even if you aren't a hipot. Same is true in SC, IT, acct. . . . .you can be here and keep your eyes to the ground and flounder. Or you can keep your eyes alert to what is happening around you and be more successful. You don't have to be a kiss a$$ or want to be the next CEO, just do good work and be decent to those you encounter throughout your day.

Depends what you do, where you came from, how long you've been here. Hired on out of college and not on the fast track, so your career progression has been slow 20 years later? That happens everywhere. Employers don't reward loyalty, so that might impact your perspective.

@bb+1jv2sm9na on point regarding workload and stress level. I can't think of a seat in industry that is more "cush" than Chevron.

I will challenge the views on comp. Any early/mid career professional with motivation and a bit of commercial savvy will do far better on the outside. Independents, Banks, and PE teams pay better and have much improved career progression.

So put on your big girl pa-ties and leave instead of whining about how awful you have it.

I’m currently looking for a new position outside, but would like to get some severance if possible. I do have a feeling our IT Director, JM, is trying to keep us all around. We are the only ones that make him look competent, and it needs to end.

You are retiring soon anyway. Just stop.

Just wait.
It’ll get worse as the layoff deadline approaches.

I don't think the work is soul crushing but there are quite a few who are just sh---y to work with. They do not want to work and get mad at those who do. They make it miserable for those who are trying to do good. You'll find bad people everywhere you go. Ignore these types of people.

Sounds like someone needs to retire soon.

Lol

Saw you on this site the other day at lunch. Probably not the best use of your time. If you are tired of the grind then leave.

Nobody cares. We are all grinding.

It’s always funny to see these posts. The stress level and workload here is less than 95% of other operators. There are plenty of things to criticize here , but most people that look for greener pastures find just as much to complain about on the other side. And usually make less money to do so.
