Thread regarding USAA layoffs

They’re denying exceptions

If you don’t want to go in, this is the time to RUN and apply. Don’t let your manager talk about flexibility if remote is important to you. There are plenty of companies with remote roles. You have time to study for interviews now, so do it.

Even if you can’t find a remote role, most companies have a more flexible RTO policy and will also give a significant salary increase.

The whole exception process is a joke. They aren’t even looking at them. My teammate’s husband is pcs’ing to another state where there is no office, so her manager put in the exception. He told her it was denied! The exception policy specifically says military dependents are allowed exceptions. Her manager is trying to make things right by talking to his bosses, but don’t know if they’ll fix and do the right thing.

Idk they approved every exception in Detections. Not sure if it's telling about the future or what in terms of layoffs but so far noones been denied in Detections.

The interviewers want details on what you work on. So have examples of your work ready to discuss in detail. They also want to see how you think, so be able to think conceptually. Understand foundational concepts of languages and systems you use, and if you are going for a more senior position, be able to explain advanced topics.

The best way to prepare for an interview is to take refresher courses, and review commonly-asked interview questions. Accept an interview and do your best. See where you need to brush up, and don't feel demoralized because you need to project confidence. Sometimes, you will not be selected and it has nothing to do with your answers. Accept that, and have the courage to move on.

You will get better with each and every interview, as opposed to staying in a stagnant position. It is true that engineers are life-long learners, so keep up these habits even in the next role.

I wish you the best of luck!

What’s the interview like? I want to, but I feel my technical skills are so behind the rest of the market

This is exactly what I am finding. There are still 100% work-from-home opportunities, and I am interviewing for one this coming Tuesday that offers me a over 10% pay increase! Plus I will be getting better work (as opposed to maintaining dead-end software) with no maintenance.
