There probably is a case against Elevance Health for age discrimination. I worked there nearly 20 years and, at the age of 54, was laid off in 2022. I saw time and time again that once you hit mid-fifties, you have a large target on your back. Just be aware of that . . . you're likely making more than your teammates or peers, and Elevance is more than happy to let you go to hit their never ending budget decrease targets. Their last few acquisitions and mergers have failed, so the only lever they remember they have is to cut admin costs. Trading talent for short-term cost 'savings' is a fool's strategy.

Fact of the matter is, folks, there should not be any for-profit health insurance companies. Making money by denying care is the model, and it is reprehensible.

Great post and very well written!! It’s very unsettling and confusing how such a huge company that strives to offer their “customers” great healthcare doesn’t show the same towards their employees. My life was changed dramatically and with other companies doing layoffs it is almost impossible to apply for jobs. But I have come to realize that majority of employees who were laid off was due to their positions being remote and now with this new Hybrid model they are enforcing, they did not live within 50 miles of an office; therefore they were not able to go into the office weekly like they aww forcing others to do. It’s a form of discrimination and I applied and was hired as “remote” since the office in my city was closed years ago. Now, because of that, I was terminated as part of the RIF which is bullsh-t. I was remote before the pandemic and lost my job because of the CEO wanting her way. 15 years with a company and she comes in and changes things that ruined thousands of lives but somehow is still getting awards and recognition.

i am so sorry for the thousands who have been affected through this sla-ghter. My question for those left behind. If the RIFs were NOT performance based, then why should I push to be a high performer? My manager never even reads my performance review.

The severance is 2 weeks off the top and 1.5 weeks for every year you have been with the company, unless you are management or higher than I believe it's 2.5 weeks for every year. The max is 26 weeks.

Well said post!! I was let go cpl mths ago. The meeting notice given was 15 mins before we all were pulled in at the same time and told by the cold script messengers it was an optimization. The questions we asked were answered basically word for word from the sheet they sent later so it didn’t matter what we asked. Just the canned response. Told we could internally apply but then told all positions were frozen. I was almost there 10 years. My core group was all let go except one. I used to recommend them to my family and friends. I do not anymore. I tell them to run. Their name is nothing but bitter grapes in my mouth now.

We're all numbers, in any corporation.

Why anyone thinks this or any company cares about you is beyond me.

I have worked at this shitshow for almost five years now, get great reviews, and do as little as fu--ing possible. Done at five daily and don't care.

They're out for the stock, I'm out for me.

Very well written! I am going to be RIF’d tomorrow. I realized that when I got the same, cold, pathetic “touch base” meeting pop up in my calendar. Checking with my colleagues, there are 3 others who also have a “touch base”. Carelon is what they think will increase their profits! All it will take is one disgruntled person to whistleblow to a state and they will be WellPoint all over again! I am not sad with my cut. I have been looking anyway and have an interview on Friday. Hopefully that will work out and I can put this horrible company on the rear view mirror!

Same here; 15 years with the company. When the 9/8 layoffs hit, my team got dismantled; 2 were let go, and I and three others were moved to a different team under the same director. Two weeks later, myself and lead get laid off and the person they keep has only been there a year and still in training.

Good lord, what an amazingly well written post. And, spot on.

I was RIF'd the exact same way from a VP I sat next near, in the same office. Cold, scripted, insulting and non-personal 2 minute read then off you go to HR for your walking papers. Was the years of stress and worry worth it? Maybe - I was thankful for the work, taking care of my family, and the people I worked with. My role at the time was completely unique and there wasn't a back up. Many, many, I worked with reached out when they heard and said "you??" -- but to the point, you're just number. Once you learn that and know it's all temporary, the easier you'll have it. Sure, care about your work, but YOU are not your work. As they say, on your death bed, it's the last thing you'll think about.

I was given a list of a few people by age only with the majority in their 50s and 60s in my same role who were not in my wave of this RIF. I didn't ask for the list. It came with language about suing them for age discrimination. I assumed this was standard communication in the RIF paperwork we received.

@1lhq+1plqr886 age has a factor most definitely thy got me at 63. So not eligible for Medicare have to have Anthem cobra for two years. I have 40 years at the company so I'm ok with it. Just a weird but exciting feeling Blessings

Nicely written and so very true... but we all need to demand a list of layoffs and the ages of each person. This is our legal right, although they know full well no one will sue a monolith like Anthem/Elevance. I was set up exactly 90 days before the RIF to look like my performance was lagging. Came out of the blue and my workload decreased, I knew I was being set up and sure enough I was. They were covering their as--s but it was my age, I am 100% sure of that. I have requested this age document required by law and have been ignored, It will be peppered with a few younger associates, but it is ageism and loyalty and long service means nothing.

Talent gap is shrinking globally and American companies are looking elsewhere as it’s simply cheaper. There is no downside - no negative press, no loss of business, etc. - so the process will continue.

Without a negative consequence this will not stop.

@1rcc+1plqr886. I agree it is sad to see people who believed they were valued find out the company doesn't value them at all. But I think younger workers are more cynical than the older ones. Because the disparities and hypocrisy is even worse now: (1) I've lived through layoffs before at ELV and didn't necessarily agree who did or didn't make the cut but they were less brutal and less obviously targeted to senior workers (age and/or tenure) (2) With past layoffs there was a clearer financial rationale presented-- contrast to the 2023 Q3 earnings call and Town Hall with the heavy emphasis on how very profitable the company is. (3) In people's day-to day there is so much fake corporate words about having a positive culture when it is the opposite -- this breeds cynicism. Like living on Orwell's Animal Farm.

It's not just this company, it's every company that will throw you to the curb for profits. Regrettably people do not realize this until they get axed. Do not get played, do the work that you agreed to do for the salary that you agreed upon. It's a job, an agreement between you and the employer. It's especailly sad to see younger people led to believe thay are valued and have a long future. Ever notice that all companies do layoff's in Q4. Consider yourself a consultant, and as with any consultant, you should be lining up your next gig the minute you start a new one. In the end collective bargaining is he answer to all of this.

The simple truth is this company will throw you away like a piece of stale bread and when you leave no one will ever mention your name again, unless it's to say something negative to cover their behind. Y'all that go above and beyond, ask to work on extra projects, work ten hour days, etc. fail to realize that you are in bed with the dev!l. You are literally sleeping with the enemy. First off I’m sympathetic for anyone affected the layoffs. I’m waiting myself to see if I’m affected and have the same feelings about the company and worries for myself. Jobs comparable in pay are not plentiful and for those of us that have many years in and getting near retirement it’s terrifying.

Let’s not assume anything will change. Calls to your representatives or congressman will do nothing. We know that companies of this size that dominate the industry and have plenty of money and lobbyists are untouchable. They will feed you the company line about commitment to the insured but their number one priority is shareholders. My department was first outsourced over 12 years ago. This after being told previously by our director how much value and experience we brought to the department. And long before that when the company used to say “employees were the greatest asset.” The dollar always wins.
And for those that were laid off and have said how sad or upset your manager seemed about it, the Reduction in Force policy literally says that Human Resources and managers work together to identify positions to be eliminated. Bottom line is no job is safe and none of us is irreplaceable.

I don't know which is worse. Getting RIF'd in this job market with tens of thousands of other highly qualified RIF'd employees from all of the other healthcare companies. I mean, CVS has a RIF'd group on LinkedIn with over 3000 members, all trying to help each other find jobs.

OR getting RIF'd but getting another role internally while feeling stuck, demoralized, and still questioning everything about this company and worse, its leadership who made the decision to cut quality people (and their families) to improve their stock price because making tens of millions of dollars is not enough for them.

Contact your senators and representatives about these issues. Never join a corporate PAC to help a company have more rights and protections than the people it employs or RIFs. You may lose opportunities for promotions as a result -- some payers have this as an unwritten rule -- but at least you'll have your integrity. Remember that all insurance companies are finance companies first and foremost.

Wow, so well written. I’ve been scared to post here until I read this, I had to respond. I was part of the RIF too after 20+ years with the company. Had the same call you had and felt so horrible for my incredibly amazing manager who was caught off guard too having to deliver the message. For all my years with Anthem I had very positive reviews and built so many amazing relationship. For some reason, I’m scared to leave too many details but I actually took another internal position before my termination date and I’m really questioning my decision. Just like you, I gave so much to company working late nights and early mornings and it meant nothing. Being with the company for so long, my salary was higher than others so I was chosen. Well, after 20+ years those pathetic annual salary increases add up. But I also deserved it because of my experience, knowledge and work ethic. I just feel bad for everyone affected.

So sorry to hear this happened to you. You deserved better. I was similarly impacted and it makes me heartsick to think of all the late nights and early morning of work, not just the hours but the mental and emotional energy I put into this job for many years to have it end in with a snap of the fingers. Maybe I am a chump for actually caring about my job and my coworkers and the customers all these years but wow it stings.

These companies, ours included need to be boycotted into the ground. They use people and families as disposable items to bolster profits. Just look around at all of the companies doing mass layoffs this month. Their stock prices go up as soon as they announce layoffs. The demise of our country, our people and our future is at stake. You can make a differnce, limit what you spend money on. Only buy from good companies that are ethically managed. Every penny these companies are denied by "We the employees, the people" will eventually be their demise.
