Felt work was low value add for two years, got laid off last year, got one offer in under two weeks and two more in the next week. I'm currently loving life in my dream role and industry.

If I had any advice it would be to be humble, stay positive, and figure out what skills are currently in demand.

Not a happy story on my part. I got laid off in December last year. I am based in MPLS and still looking for a job with seven-ish years of experience. I started as an engineer and moved to another department, and our entire group got laid off. I had plenty of interviews, and some job offers got cancelled or they pulled the rug at the last minute. I am overqualified for most jobs and underqualified for senior positions where they almost always ask for specific experience (med devices, anyone?). I am back in the market again. The severance is almost gone, unemployment is not giving me any money, and I have to take money out of my 401K soon. I should have gone for trade school.

I was fired by Seagate in 2022. I posted my termination story in the comments section of Kyle Dunnigan YouTube video. Some FED read it and tracked me down to tell me about how my story struck a chord with him. Apparently, the FED's father was an IBM'er. A true blue all the way through kind of IBM'er. IBM moved his family a lot and that made his childhood very difficult. His father was laid off shortly after Lou became CEO in the early 90's. That job loss devastated his father. The FED vowed to spend his adult life going after crooked corporations. I was like, "I feel you, man." Long story short, I work with the FED in solidarity. I'm an agent with the IRS’s Criminal Investigation unit. I'm working with the assistant secretary for export enforcement at the commerce department’s bureau of industry and security. Fun work. Great pay.

The former VP of business excellence was let go, she was forced out last fall. You obviously don’t know the truth on that one; she needed to go long ago.

Don't forget all the clowns from IBM.

It was good. Leaving all those "storage industry veterans" behind was a good move. Too many Control Data, HP, Maxtor, Quantum, Micropolis, Prairietek, blah, blah blah war stories.

Even the VP of Business Excellence knew it was time to go as Super Dave scuttles the SS HAMR.

Better pay, useful experience and I don't have to be concerned with getting laid off every 6 months. Time to sell was January of 2022. Time to find a new Job was before covid.

Can I ask where you are employed now?

I left Seagate about two years now and I am happy I did. You could see all the wrong signals even then...getting sh-t bonuses, zero recognition, no actions for your professional development and others getting favors and advantages, made it really clear in the exit interview - I doubt there would have been any action...anyways I could share why I decided to leave Seagate based on many wrong things I noticed and just decided I did not belong here..but thats not the subject of the post. I would suggest do the following:

  1. Relax, leave Seagate behind (in your mind atleast) and accept its time to change.
  2. Look at your CV and LinkedIn - refresh it up. bear in mind HDD industry is vert niche and narrow, you need to show the outer world what can you bring to the table with skills you gained at Seagate. look at job descriptions on LinkedIn for the roles you think are ideal for you.
  3. Use AI to put relevant and impactful statements in your resume, cover letter.
  4. Activate your netwrok and reach out to your connections. make your self visible and.....
  5. Apply to as many positions as you can, dont be afraid to travel outside of Derry - and also its high time to levae the myths of "derry a cheap place and better life" right there at Derry. The outside world is big and full of opportunities.
  6. Grab the first opportunity and leave that place. that place does not belong to any one, no need to feel extra-loyal to Seagate, focus on your career first. for those who did not leave Seagate when all the wrong signals were quite obvious, this is a wake up call.

Mark my words: HAMR is the horse seagate is betting heavy on, but it will never be realised to the desired industrial standard within a short span of time and time is all that matters now. HAMR will die a fast and painful death, so stop feeling as if you beliong to Seagate and LEAVEEEEEEE
