Thread regarding Seagate Technology Inc. layoffs

Latest on HAMR?

I get it that on this site people are down on HAMR and STX. But…just wondering: Is there any chance HAMR can deliver? WD is struggling and does not have the equivalent of HAMR.

@1aip+1n2DwMJw Can you explain what you mean by your comment on HAMR failure rate?

Finance will win. Providing dividend and margins to the street is top priority.

At Seagate now there is a weird dichotomy going on with top leadership working on financially destroying the companies future for years now and, at the same time, a talented engineering team developing functional HAMR drives to delivery a big win and future revenue for the company. I'm not really sure which scenario will win, but BEST case is HAMR provides enough cash flow for Seagate to drift as a zombie debt laden company for a handful of years to come. All other scenario's are worse.

If HAMR is doing so well, why was my salary cut?

If Seagate is even 2 years ahead of WD and Toshiba, the industry is doomed to even lower volumes and lower margins as tape and flash encroach from both sides. The best bet is to no charge license the tech.

The problem I have is that there are no more r&d innovator jobs - the days of crazy, fun and rewarding work requiring millions to put into production are long gone - and so are the people who could make it happen. IMO the halls are now filled with lesser individuals content to twiddle and re-learn the work of their predecessors, only extending it incrementally to the next product - trying not to break it in the process. There is budget and market demand for little more and the individuals needed for this work are completely disposable and a dime-a-dozen to replace. You whimper in fear for your jobs - but all I see in your futures are hardhats and toilet brushes to keep the factories running.

HAMR is irrelevant for the current issues we are having. People are not buying our 20/22TB like they did with the 16/18TB during the pandemic. Also, no one cares about dual actuator. Plain and simple.

What management says about HAMR and what the truth is regarding HAMR will only align when it is in the short-term financial interest of management. Be a critical thinker. Use courage, if you have it, and jump ship. Or, the decision will be made for you.

I used to work at Seagate in the early 21st century. Got laid off in 2008 at the downturn. My advice: if the ship is sinking (it is) the get the fcuk off.

Your choice.

@1qwo+1n2DwMJw WD has flash? you mean the JV where they pay a fixed price that's too high to sell to phones or their non-existent enterprise flash that is growing by bounds and leaps and still have less than 10% market share? That flash? Or the flash that caused them to carry a debt since they bought it. Or the flawed controller that will instantaneously delete your SanDisk drive? Your former CEO was right, WD was insane buying SanDisk (especially for the price they paid). Or the flash that will soon be spun out into a Japanese company? Rumor is an announcement this month.

HAMR is absolutely working and customers are currently running HAMR drives. I won’t go into numbers as I’m still a Seagate Employee and my anger will only go so far. As with all new products it comes down to yields and the point of profitability. At this time even if we had an unlimited supply of HAMR drives we have only a very small amount of buyers. So until buyers start calling the cuts will sadly continue.
