Macys small format stores

Was wondering how the small format stores are doing/are they successful? And if so, any future plans for them?

@19v What about the new small format store opening in November at Midway Crossings in Miami? Not sure your information is correct.

The small format locations are another failed attempt at finding a future for Macy's. There are no small format new stores on the books. The stores simply don't meet the ROI requirements for future growth and customers are disappointed with the assortment and service levels in these small box locations. No new Macy's stores on the list for development, no new Backstage locations, only movement of Backstage from underperforming locations to some of the stores that don't yet have one.

There is a reason that Tony is focused on Bloomingdales and Blue Mercury, these chains are the future for growth. We will reduce Macy's down to 300 to 350 top performing doors and focus on growth in the other businesses.

@ca This is one of Macy’s biggest consistent struggles: its identity crisis. One minute we’re competing with Target and Kohl’s, then we try to appeal to the TJ Maxx/Marshalls crowd by opening Backstage, but then we also want a piece of the gray market, so we establish Marketplace on the Omni side to unsuspecting customers, right? But then on the other hand, there are always complaints about the lack of “elevation”. So now, per their instruction, you place less merchandise and fewer fixtures on the floor, leading to a crapton of back stock that doesn’t sell because you don’t have the staff to support constant replenishment.

Bold New Chapter indeed!

Depends on the area. I managed one, its smaller...but same BIG Macys issues. The main one was staffing. Lower wages doesnt keep talent in this economy. Esp since every associate has to do...EVERYTHING. And I mean that. Imagine being a Cosmetics associate AND unloading a truck lol. Imagine doing Merchandising, customer service, returns AND visual all in the same hour. It was nice being in a shiny new environment, considering most macys buildings are Frankenstein carcasses of past retailers. But what's the point if the brand itself is a steaming pile of horsesh-t??

The Market was a good idea, couldve been a GREAT idea under better leadership Divisionally. The merchandise allocated to each is horribly off, and logistically a nightmare. Macys is experiencing an identity crisis lately:

Am I high End...or Ross?!

They are basically return centers.
Understaffed and bursting with uncurated merch.

Retail is becoming a place to try on clothes in person and then ordering online to be delivered that afternoon or tomorrow by Amazon much cheaper. Sad, but the way things are going with overhead costiňgs
