Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

HMP Lies

They will tell you in Townhalls that other places "like" the Open Plan, unassigned hoteling.

The truth is that if you actually speak to any of those "other places" (San Ramon, Perth, etc.); none of them have a good thing to say about it.

HMP is a slow motion disaster, designed to get you to quite without severance.

What are they planning to do with these renovated Houston buildings when the jobs are moved to offshore? What is their plan?

@15v: @15j here. I’m not alone in that ballpark. Scroll down and you will find someone else with that estimate. I can’t say more because it would expose me. Suffice it to say that when I heard the number it was a truly d-mbfounding moment. Who would sign off on such a level of spend and for what benefit

@15j last guy had meaningful math and a cogent explanation. You just say x8. Why? How could it possibly cost that much?

@149 Not even close. Try x 8

The newer building (1500) cost about $200 million when Chevron bought it from a group of physicians who flipped it after picking it up from Enron bankruptcy for $100 million. We paid $340 million for the larger 1400 building in 2011. Both buildings were originally built out as cubicles then everyone went crazy so after a few years they were reconstructed as offices. THAT was expensive and also d-mb as they set up the floors with way too much wasted space (open areas, meeting rooms, etc) so it has been a disaster waiting for reconfiguration ever since. HMP tries to maximize space use, which is worth a try. The cost is around $100 million which is less than half the price of building the third building on the YMCA lot. Staff will hate it and it will change in a few years after the originators have their Chairman's Awards on the their walls.

I've never had so much training and orientation about working on a different floor

Open floor plans were the rage 10-15 years ago, and just about every major company (non startup) that tried it has reverted back to dedicated workspaces because they realized that people hate it and were less productive when they don’t have the right equipment or environment to facilitate focus.

Like a lot of other things Chevron is behind the times determined to relearn the same lessons others already have.

So what’s going on with HMP?

Cant wait until they put sensors in all the rooms to check where we are at every minute of the day. You know it's coming.

@ef and with tariffs that’ll likely be higher. Anybody got the intel on that?

@fb no way. They bought the 2nd building for 400MM from the dentists back in 2013 or whatever. They couldn't spend that much

@ef 700 to 800 mm?!?!?! Holy fu-k! For that price tag, I better be getting a gold-plated unassigned seat. What a complete waste of money. Think how many jobs that kind of spend would fund.

Why don’t they add this into a CES? Because they know the answers would be sh--e and then what would CRE do?

I've heard $700-$800MM from several reliable sources on the original cost to re-fit the floors in downtown Houston. Add to that since they are apparently behind schedule and over budget on the first batch of floors in 1500. Talk about the Chevron way!

It’s a demoralization exercise and nothing else. There are plenty of seats.

They’re not happy ‘til you’re not happy.

@OP They are actually telling you that other locations love it? Lol! That’s what they said about Houston!
