Thread regarding HCSC (Health Care Service Corporation) layoffs

Career progression

I was a part of the sale and I’m curious since this is a new area, if there will be anyway for career progression opportunities in the future at HCSC. I’m the highest level of individual contributor (I have been in healthcare 20 years), but seems like all the roles are in the office and we don’t have an office locally so will I ever be able to apply to any other roles in the future? Or do I need to eventually look elsewhere. Does anyone know? Also has anyone ever worked for another blue plan before? Was wondering if they would count my previous blue experience because I lost a lot of PTO. I’m assuming no but any experience with that out there?

Heard today that Cigna employees that came over can not be hired to other internal roles within HCSC until one year of employment with HCSC, so no promotion or moving into another role for one year.... Also,.if you don't live in one of the 5 states plus TN, you aren't eligible for a role with HCSC.... Career progression is pretty tough with those rules.

This is true. So Cigna employees are stuck in their role for a year, and have zero options if they don't live in one of the 6 approved states. Which is interesting because one of the taglines for HCSC is "local presence" ...

Saying there is no career path at HCSC is a lie. There are plenty of promotion opportunities for each and every friend or family member of the c-suite.

There is no such thing as promotions at HCSC. You have to apply if you want to move up a grade level. I think it's an attempt to make sure others have an opportunity but it's more a facade

The exception is when we receive emails about senior people in Corporate Strategy who get promoted for their outstanding performance

Don’t expect to find defined “career paths” here any time soon, our “talent management” leader just gave his notice.

Generally speaking, job security is good. Layoffs are fairly rare and when they do happen, are usually not large in scale. But we also haven't seen a merger like this in a long time. And even by HCSC standards, they really seem to be tightening the purse strings this year. Does that mean something is coming? Or are they just trying to make sure it doesn't? I really don't know. Sorry, I wish I had a better answer for you.

What is career safety like at HCSC? Recently acquired Cigna person here. Lingering feelings of uneasiness for the future. Will we help with this merger only to be laid off? I just don’t know how “safe” we are. Is it better to leave now and not face that 👋 once everything has been ironed out.

How can there be career progression when they don't even publish the career steps. Like how do you know what the next role is? Smh

HCSC is very stingy with PTO. Likely due to their refusal to properly staff their departments, PTO has a big impact when only one person knows how to complete a specific function, and there are a lot of cases like this across the company.

And as far as promoting as a telecommuters. It isn't impossible, but opportunities are very few and far between.

That’s discouraging.

Typically, There’s no advancement without being in an office. This has happened to people that were in areas where they closed offices. The only way to promote if you’re telecommuter is to promote into another dept. or role that is also telecommuter.

Let’s not forget how they changed the PTO policy as a whole. Most newer staff only earn 4.0 hours per pay period! Keeping in mind you can only roll over a total of 16 PTO hours. Yet as everyone is aware of, if you’re part of senior leadership you have unlimited

Rest assured that your PTO is gone for good. HCSC is known for randomly taking away PTO every few years.

I was once on the train going home from downtown Chicago. I was listening to a couple of young guys talking. Both were in IT areas that were quite hot at the time.

One mentioned that he interviewed at "blue cross" but the location made it clear it was HCSC, not the association. He said "they only offered me two weeks PTO" and both laughed quite hard.

Most companies think PTO is a cheap benefit, HCSC thinks it is made of gold.
