I see several comments about Thursday being "the" day for upcoming layoffs. Do people know this for sure, or is it just speculation?

oh yes it was. My son was let go on Thursday. i was upset, but now think it was for the best. He was not happy at all and would not have quit on his own, glad they made the decision for him. He can now move on.
9,000 will be let go by the end of Q1, so we have more time. The clock started ticking on 1/1, this is per what it was communicated to the media.
End of pay period. When does the 9000 countdown start?
