Various well placed sources, including two SVPs, indicated large layoffs starting this week. Have heard rumored numbers between 1500 and 2000 employees losing their jobs, but this includes international offices, and NorCal offices, so San Diego numbers should be less. Will be interested to see how accurate this is.

PIP based (performance based) layoffs have already happened mid November (after review). So all these new ones are purely "layoffs".
Does 600 include contractors and temp employees? If they include temps and contractor the number should cross 2000 easily
I know they are not renewing many contract positions, i know many teams removed temps with 2 weeks notice last month, so these counts would not get included in 600
it should be 600 permanent employees , correct me if I am wrong
Thank you for siting your sources. After reading it I am conVince that there are loopholes that companies exploit to get around WARN. The loopholes however seem to be related to 1) the thresholds within a 30 day period, 2) the existence of subsidiaries to establish separate entities and 3) asking employees to waive their rights - these loopholes do exist but they have nothing to do with blue vs. white collar jobs. This is substantiated by two facts: 1) that there is no verbiage on the CA EDD distinguishing blue vs. white collar employees with regards to WARN, and 2) when BRCM had their white collar layoff earlier this year they notified the EDD under WARN. Seems that there's enough data on both sides of this discussion and we'll just have to see what happens. Thanks again for the article - it was a good read.
On white collar WARN requirements:

One of the shocks for the service workers is they call me and say, 'I lost my job and everybody lost their job without notice. Isn't this against the law?' It's a huge shock to white-collar workers," Mr. Courtney said.

3000 views on this thread - LMAO, this site is spreading info like no other internal communication channel... Marry Christmas everyone, it's going to be fun over next three weeks. BTW, I did hear about a couple of old timers (15 years) departing next week.
@51800: Based on the requirements on the CA EDD website, WARN would in fact apply. Can you site your source of information? If you are correct, I'd like to update my understanding. Thank you.
WARN do not apply to white collar jobs.
The one thing that is certain is that QCOM has not as of yet filed a WARN disclosure to the EDD. This means that if the layoffs are announced next week and they are of the magnitude discussed here, affected employees will get a 60 calendar day notice.
The entire San Diego site is rampant with rumors and everyone seems to be over sensitive, paranoid and looking over their shoulder. I know at least two people who got notified about 3 weeks ago and given 2 weeks to leave the company. These cuts happened on the Sr. Director level and people affected are QC old-timers who had been closing-in on 16-17 years of employment. Just like everyone else, I hear the rumors of a 5% workforce reduction or about 1600-1800 people across EVERY business and department including QCT that has been considered safe heavens in the past. I also heard that some regional offices in emerging markets slated to be shut down.
Merry Christmas everyone!
HR source tells me it's now definitely next week
Yeah, no kidding. Guess this is our Christmas bonus :-(
Agree. The board of directors is more worried about how it plays that Rob Chandhok, Bill Davidson, Peggy Johnson, etc. THEN layoffs plays on Wall St. then how it affects people at the company. Really disgraceful.
Hate this strategy, they should do it and get it over with ASAP.
I have a source in HR, needless to say this is very sensitive stuff. He/She confirms that there will be cuts (they are planning to cut deep) - it's likely they will not be ready to pull the trigger in December, so, it'll likely happen during first two weeks of January 2015. Please do not trash me now, I just shared what I know...
Hey Anonymous51451. The two people I heard from were a higher up in QCT and someone in HR. I'd call those good sources. The only thing in doubt st this point is whether it will be next week or they will postpone it until Jan.
Folks..let's not guess things..Please don't post things you've heard from random people. If you have a well founded source other than the rumors we've been hearing, we'd love to hear it. Otherwise, let's not fuel the fire unnecessarily.
Let's hope for the best..
I agree with Anonymous51268, Davis is doing this move publicly to prop up the stock price as the year end looms. Remember, the executive brigade gets bonuses that are dependent on the stock price and this directly correlate to that driver. Also agree that the good days are over and that we are maturing as a company with a limited growth opportunities.
The ramifications of the China licensing issues are certainly a large consideration here, as if QTL cannot continue to bring in revenue as it has in years past, then money will not be as free flowing as in the glory days of the Q.
Also, George Davis is a very different type of CFO from Bill Keitel. He actually believes that the value of making layoff announcements will benefit the stock and that is worth doing it in a more "open" way than the stealth layoffs in years past.
150 views, wow! i thought i was the only one trying to figure out what's going on here
What do you guys thing, from a percent standpoint, how big will the hit be on us here in San Diego? Just curious. I know that there is a ton of anxiety but there is very little we can do right now aside from adopting a wait-and-see approach. Also, last year we had vice-president level executives laid off and others have been demoted - do you think we'll see a similar scenario this year. The timing is almost identical, last year they hit around 12/1 as well - I am not saying 2013 was better or worse than 2014, just trying to see if other people see a pattern here as well.
Actually the layoff might have been postponed until next week
