Thread regarding Staples Inc. layoffs

Engagement and the free riders

The key here is to turn the great majority of disengaged people into engaged ones and make the engaged people more motivated by drastically improving leadership practice, instead of dividing the workforce into two groups and treating them differently. Our experience shows that most – not all – disengaged people do not want to stay disengaged if conditions permit and they do want to be seen in a positive light by their bosses and colleagues and have a successful career. As disengaged people become engaged, those already engaged tend to get even more motivated, seeing that the number of free-riders is reduced and that good conduct is recognized and duly rewarded.

How can an employee want to stay engaged and motivated toward having a "successful career" with all the turmoil going on, and virtually zip from the executive management other than announcements of store/facility closures? Until there is a definitive announcement about what parts of the company are going to survive and what parts of the company are going to be shitcanned, it's a bit much to expect an associate to keep whistling past the graveyard and giving 100%. And even beyond the current threat of downsizing, there are far too many underperformers who never get taken to task (or just plain let go) for never meeting the level of expectation the company sets for them as part of their job. In some cases, these slackers have been kicking around the company for close to a decade. They're still getting their paycheck every week. Why should overachievers continue to bust their ass when management doesn't have the balls to kick the slugs to the curb?

I remember that video. I wanted to reach through the screen and punch him.

Yet, a year later, he does take his undeserved bonus while screwing over those that actually earned one,

It's clearly over for most of retail. The time to innovate was 5 to 8 years ago. The time THEY got it was 2 years ago. Even now the innovation's they bring to the table are almost always old recycled ideas.

THINK CELL PHONES. Or as it's rebranded MOBILE.

Remember the grandiose plans about global domination. The political outreach stupidity, as our upper exec's began to be seduced by their own self importance. Like Powell invited to speak to all of us years ago. The video with Demos getting angry at folks being told they won't get bonuses. Still can't believe this ass-wipe allowed this to be made public, but it's proof of his arrogance. The investors are being bled dry by those that have NO VISION. We are tired of it....

Sounds as if someone opened their Mgmt 200 book from 1980. Engaged,Positive Light. successful career, blah.blah,blah. The chances of a career with staples went away yrs ago. Motivating people who are sacrificed for the good of a few is impossible. Check with your local concentration camp.

I think this feeling is company wide, from retail to sales.. to the drivers to the supporting staff. There is no motivation to do well anymore.. just do the least to get by and not fired for the time being.

More gospel from the Staples Bible? People are disengaged because they are tired of this company screwing them over when they do their jobs correctly. 2 years straight my store made budget and gold Csat - yet no bonus. All we get is an ass thrashing when we are below par for any flavor of the month initiative. Positive re-enforcement needs a bigger roll in this company to turn it around (that's if Framingham WANTS to even turn retail around, they are beating it like a red haired step child lately) EVERY aspect of this business has been negative for the last 5-6 years.
