I was a legacy McKesson employee who's tenure was around 25 years when I was informed that my position was eliminated last year. I thought I share some information / thoughts in hopes that it at least may help someone. Note that I am basing assumptions on how things worked at CHC a year ago.
First, take a deep breath and remember it is business and not personal. It is in no way a reflection on your character, professionalism, and work ethic.
You will typically be provided a two or four week non working period which means you will still have access to CHC email and other tools but may have to access via a personal laptop if your CHC Laptop is collected when you are informed your position has been eliminated.
During your non working period, you will still accrue PTO and have benefits and be paid as you normally would.
Severance does not kick in until after your non working period is over and you have sign and returned your Severance Agreement.
Severance varies based on tenure. I lost half of what I would have received while a McKesson Employee but what I did receive allowed me time to actually have time to think about next step.
Severance is paid in lump sum via direct deposit (if you have it set up ) or check. Taxes are taken out but no other deductions since you are no longer an employee.
There can be a delay from the time you received the lump sum payment and your last pay check. Hopefully you have emergency savings you can tap into if you run into this
You will receive a separate payout for accrued but unused PTO days. It can take up to 30 days from your "Official" end employment date to receive this payment
Always use your Floating Holidays first and asap (Jan, Feb, Mar). You will not be reimbursed for unused Floating Holidays
If you still get rewards with vitality, cash them out immediately.
You will like be able to leverage some Help programs that CHC will offer as part of your Severance Agreement; use them as they will likely include Resume services.
Contact People Connection and request that they mail you your last Pay Statement, your Lump Sum Statement, and your PTO Payout Statement. This is good info to have for your tax records as it will have all the YTD totals.
File for Unemployement in your state immediately; the paperwork and process can take some time to go through. Each state is different so review your states rules as Severance may impact when you can start collecting.
COBRA is expensive but available; You can apply for COBRA once your non working period ends (CHC will provide info around that).
NETWORK, NETWORK, NETWORK. Losing your job is not something you would want to advertise but it is the nature of business. Inform your peers in CHC and former CHC that you are looking for a new Job. Be active on Linkedln, update your current status, and reach out to people. Most folks that where impacted about the same time I was found a new job with a company that had a former peer working there.
DO NOT COMMUNICATE/POST NEGATIVE COMMENTS; It will do not good and you do not want any of your peers or managers has this as a last reflection on your character.
My closing comment – While everyone is at a different stage in their career you will very likely quickly realize that being RIF’d was the best thing for you. It was for me as I had very little faith in leadership and direction of the company (and this will be my only bitter comment on CHC). I found new employment well before any of my severance payment ran out and work for a company that actually seems to appreciate me. It is not a perfect company but it is perfect for me.
Hope this helps!
