Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Hardware Portfolio

Ask yourself where does IBM make money. System Z definitely, Enterprise Power (absolutely). Scale out Power (not so much). Linux Power (nope). Open power (yes, BUT mainly from IP license deals). Storage follows the same path. Enterprise storage makes money, but it’s a limited market.

As you move down the product line, there isn’t much money made. Tape actually makes money, but almost no one uses it like they used to. Flash definitely makes money and that is where the cloud has migrated to. Overall IBM makes money where they have a monopoly (System Z and Enterprise Power), or can license the IP (open power).

IBM also makes money on their purchased niche (flash) where they have also invested via their labs. IBM loses money where there is competition (storage) or low volume (Power scale out, and Tape). So if you move 80% of your customers to the cloud (say 30-35 data centers around the world) how many reps, product specialists, and CE’s do you need to service 35 locations. Not very many.

That same equation can be played out for each division (services/SWG, cognitive, and IGF).

The new IBM will have far fewer folks in it!

So why do we have well many many thousands of clients both large and small running on IBM HW?

Not everything can run in the Cloud nor will it be cheaper. Ask Amazon how much is costs to move your data. You want a copy of the data when you have PB's? Good luck with that when you get the bill.

Ifv. How does this square with IBM announcing at Think that IBM Cloud was read to roll out slices of Power HW? Steve Sibley from Austin gave the over view. Are you saying IBM is punting on all of Power cloud, or just on OS/400 and AIX Power Cloud. EG LINUX and AI would be supported on Power cloud. If IBM is stepping away, does that mean that Google will fill that void with their offering (Eg also announced at Think)

Yep, that's a problem:

Austin AWS is growing a large hardware division focused on cloud specific chips and servers

Over in Power, our technical leader was abruptly pushed out for reasons no one knows and replaced with a business lady from India who has focused on cost cutting and simplification. The roadmap was significantly slashed and the only products currently listed for Power10 are in the enterprise class. It matches what you stated, focus hw only on areas where we are making money even though those areas continue to shrink at a fairly high rate. Looks like all IBM cloud hardware will be based on using commodity x86 servers. Using power in the cloud has been abandoned where as a few blocks down here in Austin AWS is growing a large hardware division focused on cloud specific chips and servers. IBM Austin chip talent continue to migrate to AMD, AWS, Apple, ....
