Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Don't work there!

Young professionals with tons of student loan debt should not expect to work at Ford for any extended period of time. See what the company has done our parents, aunts, uncles, friends, etc. They push/throw old older, experienced employees like old shoes. They could care less about their employees. Glad I left last year. This is repeated behavior every 10 years. Work for a company that values your expertise and experience.

interview every 2 - 3 years until you retire. bottom line.

That strategy works well when you're young. As you get older, you will find that it's harder and harder to find the next job, until it becomes next to impossible.

Barbara Ehrenreich wrote a couple of interesting books. The first one was "Nickled and Dimed". where she worked a series of menial jobs to understand what it was like to be a member of the working poor.

She then decided to write a book about what it was like to work for Corporate America. The book was titled "Bait and Switch". Her initial plan was to get some kind of job with Corporate America, but to her astonishment, she found that she couldn't land one. So she changed the focus of her book to those who lost their jobs and couldn't get new ones. She found plenty of material for that, meeting a seemingly endless stream of people who had given up searching for a "real job" and who wound up either selling insurance, real estate or some part time gig. She met a guy who was supposed to be a "career coach" and only after using his services did she learn that he was perpetually broke, plus he couldn't help her find a job. The only gig she could get was selling AFLAC insurance.

You will not work 20 years at the same company. Those days are over, it has nothing to do with the auto industry. if you do, you're stupid anyway and are selling yourself short. interview every 2 - 3 years until you retire. bottom line.

We also know that 28-year lump, should have been let go 27.9 years ago (after 89 days).

Ford HR will low ball you because they think they know better. Anyone under the age of 30 should request 50-100% more added to any salary offer. There are no pensions anymore, and you are giving up some of the best years of your life. Don't think for a minute they won't toss you when they are done with you (10 or 20 years depending on auto cycles).

This company will use you up anywhere between 10-20 years and then spit you back out. For fresh undergrads, I wouldn't work here for more than 2-3 years...if you get s--- in for more than 3 years, you will most likely limit yourself to only auto. The ONLY reason to stay for more than 3 years--7 years max--is if Ford would pay for your MBA (2 years working, 3 years part time MBA, 2 years working post MBA--so you don't have to pay back the company). If you don't want to limited yourself to auto forever, don't stay. I know a guy who was let go after 28+ years, spent his entire life with Ford and now has limited options.

Absolutely true. They lure in the kids every year with all sorts of promises. Telling them "they are the future" and that "they are the most prized and valued employees". Just remember, youth is fleeting AND every year there is a new batch of kids they bring in. Within just a couple years, you too will be included in what they treat as "old/ burned out dead weight employees".

One of our co-workers acquired several Tubby's Subby's franchises during their career, last week during the downsizing, heard several more were purchased to augment their wealth, wise move. Never have all your eggs in one basket.
