General Motors and Ford Merger

Is General Motors and Ford merger a possibility? What are your thoughts on this in light of the recent industry turmoils? In my mind it'd help with:

  • cost management

  • consolidation of sales efforts

  • procurement/purchasing scale

  • consolidating R&D

Honestly, I am not an expert and this is just me rambling but this potential merger is something increasingly looks as a way out of the current conundrum.

What are your thoughts?

I think of the Titanic and the Lusitania playing a game of chicken, hitting an iceberg at the same time, a VW Uboat firing a torpedo and a Toyota dive bomber dropping payload on the leftovers. Conglomeration never works. Too many egos on both sides tear it up from the inside out. How about Ford just focuses on making great high quality products people can afford and want to buy. C'mon Bill, time to send the furniture salesman to back to Grand Rapids. There aren't any books you can read that will tell you that. Think from the gut, most of the time if it smells like sh--, chances are...

A merger will never happen. The Ford family has control and will NEVER give it up. It not about efficiency, cost savings, technology acquisition, etc. it’s about the Ford family business, legacy, giving back to Detroit, and pushing for green plants and vehicles.

The train station makes no financial sense but complete sense to the Ford family.

Was talking to an unclassified last week & she expressed the merger with Tesla was off the table due to complications with stock. Oh well, at least they tried, count the blessings.

Between the 2 of them, they'll have to most H1B staffers of any company.

I think that Ford merging with FCA would make more sense. Fiat is doing fine overseas, Chrysler is OK-ish over here, so adding Ford to the mix would be very complementary.

Just my two cents.

Fresh off the press...

GM Merger With Ford Looks Likely

https://www.marketwatch.com/story/gm-merger-with-ford-looks-more-likely-2019-05-28

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles N.V. (NYSE: FCAU) proposed a merger with Renault that would create the world’s third largest carmaker. The eroding economics of the industry make such deal more likely by the day. Deep trouble at Ford Motor Co. (NYSE: F) and General Motors Co.’s (NYSE: GM) need for more heft to compete with rivals Toyota and Volkswagen make a marriage between the two largest car companies increasingly probable.

There as a long thread on this on GM's site here:

@Ym1mZpV

Anyhow, it quoted an article which was well written.

It turned out that the last sentence read like this:

Finally, we have to let you know that this entire article has been complete b---s---. April Fools!

Just quit this kind of talk.

One company is public and the other is a hybrid of ownership - hence why I believe the stock for the hybrid organization languishes.

It's absurd that the family controlled company would relinquish ownership to their cross town adversary.

There are no two OEMs more similar in size, scope and portfolio than Ford and GM. They compete fiercely with each other in the same spaces and don't have very many complimentary products. I can't see the advantages of a merger between the two.

Ford's problem is their many times approved global failure vs. the neccessity to become one of only a handful of dominant global players that will survive. Indeed Ford is in the process of moving most activities back to North America in order to escape global competition. Therefore a domestic merger with GM would make more sense than a merger with Honda or Kia.

I would rather see a merger with Dongfeng, Lifan, Kia, Hyundai, or Nissan for global footprint, time to get some "outside the box" thinking here folks.

I think most Ford folks on this forum will say either "No" or "Never". I am pretty sure you'd get the same responses on the GM board here on layoff.com
