Hi 50+. Were you offered outplacement at Right Mgt? If so, please take it. They will show you how to make your resume ageless (reduce the number of previous roles, eliminate language such as more than 20 years exp. Ensure learning is up to date. State unemployment offices have similar resources.

Thank you for posting!. I am 50+ and I was laid off a few months ago after almost 10 years with a start up that was acquired by TR 10 years ago. Its very upsetting and sad to put your heart and soul into supporting an entire business only to be let go because your position isn't considered "vital" in the new TR world. The decision made by people that know nothing about what you did to keep your team on track, working behind the scenes to make your team and business run smoothly and to know that your supervisors and executives did not fight to keep you since they were busy fighting to save their own jobs. I was told my position was available in either Carrollton or Eagan and I could relocate. LOLOL!. NO THANKS.
I'm finding the job hunt this time around very discouraging. Businesses would rather hire snot nosed college kids with a 4 year degree and no experience than a professional with 20 years of administration experience because they don't have to pay them a worthwhile wage and they think that having a college degree means they are loyal, organized, can follow directions and professional. It doesn't. I don't have a college degree but what I learned through out my career , Isn't taught in a classroom....
I read your post and find it encouraging that I too will find a job where my experience is valued and will enjoy coming to work every day. I will most likely have to compromise on some things as well, but for sanity and happiness, it will be worth it!

TR is gonna be history soon. And guess what? All the good talents were already long gone!

My dad worked until he was in his mid-80s--partly because he wanted to, but mostly because: a) his company's CEO was found to have been stealing from the employees' 401(k)s several years ago so they lost large amounts of money; and b) my mother's final illness not long afterward took a huge financial toll on them. Sometimes you can do everything right, and it only takes one or two things to yank the rug out from under you. I think my parents' story (part b, more than part a) isn't that uncommon anymore.

I would have been able to accept retirement better if I would have been allowed to prepare for it. You will understand when you are older.

Is retirement not a thing anymore? I'm not being snarky, sincerely. I hope I won't have to be searching for a job at 66. But I can understand volunteering.

It’s harder at age 66. I have had to string together several volunteer opportunities to keep me busy.
