Thread regarding IBM layoffs

RA is coming and we know it…

We see IBM’s pipeline, we see the work being done, we see and hear customers, we observe executive behavior. We track sales, we see expenditures, we follow financial press, we understand our numbers. We look at all of this and we know what will happen...

Ginni & the exec cohort, yes we know and feel all of it… You are gearing for a massive RA and we know why you are doing it – cannot help that greed urge, right… And that’s how we see you – you are a huge pile of greed glued together by vanity, egoism and hollow soul… Be ashamed.

6-7 layers deep seems to be the norm nowadays. However think of all the project/program managers out there in addition to the people managers. Not claiming that none of these people are doing useful work but there's likely some bloat there. When you come across people who aren't managers yet have the word "manager" or "architect" in their job titles, be wary.

Just curious to know in which division(s) are the people claiming having 13 levels of management. I am in the Cloud division and it has been a while I have only 6 levels...

Going from 13 to 7 layers of management will require new thinking which means changing the exec management team. Gerstner did it after coming on board. It took a LOT of change, but he got it done. It was a definite shock to the IBM system, but definitely needed. IBM is in the exact same position today, and the current management team isn’t able to execute, thus new management is needed

Cutting mgmt/chart-pushers in half or from 13 layers to 7 would be FANTASTIC. Too many chiefs, not enough Indians, for sure. But I doubt this problem will be fixed.

Dropping management levels from 13 layers to 7 layers plus trimming GTS by 2/3’s and GBS by 1/3 just about achieves your 100k total. Throw in the HCL buy, and Watson commerce spinoff along with the announced IGF restructuring and you are there. IBM has had a freeze on hiring for most of the rest of IBM (sales, marketing, plants, labs, technical resources, tss, etc) for the past 3 years (since 2016). This has resulted in a slow attrition rate as when someone’s leaves they are not allowed to be backfilled. Yes this slowly drains higher paid talent, but justified the purchase of RH. (New blood) The board pulled the trigger on IBM’s current right sizing post 2nd quarter earnings of 2018. The target for rightsizing at that time was end of 2019

@4oxz, management needs to be cut in half, GTS needs to be trimmed so is GBS. That will account for the 100K.

The reason IBM is in the situation they are in is because they cut too many talented people that actually did the work or the moral was so low for those talented people that remained to care about the company anymore. Not too long ago IBM was about 500K employee, thinks about that, does this seem like a growing company.

You State 100k worth of employees need to go to make IBM competitive. Where would you trim and what revenue would you forego to achieve the 250k headcount. Nothing comes free, and asking IBM to trim down by 30% is a really big haircut. Remember IBM is going to go up by 12k worth of heads when RH comes on board. So what business segments have run their course, and are a millstone around IBM’s neck.

Yes they are coming indeed, for Europe, message is published on work council intranet pages that a mostly voluntary based resource action is to be finished before end of q2. GTS accounts for 2/3.
