Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Get out of automotive as fast as you can

This is a dying industry in the shape that we know it. Electric cars, autonomous, robot cars, or whatever… have very little in common with the cars that we know today, in the context of production, of course. I would advise all the laid off workers not to waste their time applying for jobs in other competing companies, pretty soon they could find out it’s all the same c-ap as they faced at Ford.

You don't need a 4 year degree to enter the healthcare industry, 2 years at a community college will get you a job in nursing. Once your in the hospital will pay for the last two years. If you already have a 4 year degree you may qualify for a BSN after attending only 2 years of school.

I don’t understand why the younger generation go work in hi tech industry rather than automatics... unless mommy and daddy work for the big three... that explains it

I'm not sure where you are getting the idea that health care is making money... unless you mean the doctors, but they are mostly crippled by student loan debt if they are under 40 because, well, universities capitalizing on loans and jacking costs up over the last 20 years. Maybe you mean the insurance companies...but it's not like their employees are making a lot of money either. Less than a comparable job at an auto, in fact, and sh--tier benefits.

Ideally, one should do their best to diversify their skillset and be adaptable to change. If you are not going to try and make it on your own in some way, then you may as well do your best for the people who pay your mortgage. This isn't the old world anymore - one job for life, "get me a pension and 2% every year for showing up." No, everyone is replaceable and skillset needs change. The sooner people realize that, the sooner they get over the ever changing climate of industry like this.

China and the EU are going electric and they are larger markets than the US. Ford's failure to grow market share in either is a major factor in its slow motion demise.

Healthcare that's where the money is, I mean at the cost of insurance, that industry is k--ling it, while our dumb--ses are getting laid off.

It's a changing industry but no matter how you cut it as long as there are transportation needs there will be tons of positions. All those vehicles of any type need servicing. A well run dealership can service and pay the bills with a quality service department.

Hardly. There is no national infrastructure set up for electric cars. If you own one, it's pretty much a local conveyance. Until there is (a national infrastructure), electric car sales won't boom.

The same for AV. You cannot have each companies cars only talking to themselves. There first needs to be some kind of agreed upon standard between every car company so that they ALL can talk to each other. What discussions have there been to discuss what the infrastructure for AV will look like? No one alive today will see a majority of AV cars on the road. That reality is at least 100 years away. Plus, how do you make them hack proof. Right now you can't.

The Federal government can't take a sh-- without getting it all over their fingers let alone pass an infrastructure bill that would help the advent of electric and AV vehicles.
