Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

Railroads pushing out the unions at the end of the current contract?

Serious question, maybe someone understands the process. From what I can tell, the railroad can break with the union due to recent changes in the law. Doesn’t that require a vote by the members of each trade union to kick the unions out? Seems the number I saw was 65%. Given the concessions we didn’t get on the last contract, the next one will be equally bad, but I don’t see 65% of the surviving members still working voting to get rid of the union. They would be cutting the last artery in their own throat. Serious input is appreciated.

If anyone thinks that Unions are not needed just look and see how UP treats their management and you can see what we'd be dealing with x10

I'm retired from the UP after 36 years as a Carmen..If the unions somehow get booted out, the swhtf for sure..If you guys think its bad now, imagine what it would be like if management didn't have any union rules to keep them in line..Go to your union meetings and get involved..Good luck guys..

I'm glad you like it there. Hopefully that bonus is the same every time. Up isnt as great a place to work as it once was but it's still pretty good. You just have to get past all the b---s--- just like any job.

I already went. The grass is much greener. The insurance is better. After the insurance cost, the $700 clothing allowance, the company paid uniform service and the $5200 bonuses the working conditions, vehicles and training are far better. Ask other employees and by far most like working for TTX. They also do a better job. Do some research. Your past experience with a contractor means nothing. Just like all class 1’s are not the same, nor are contractors.

Sounds like you should go to ttx. What are the deductibles for their health insurance. How much do they get for a clothing allowance. Even 1000 a year for it is twenty dollars a week which is forty minutes of a carman wage. I worked for a contractor before this and had to put up with just as much BS as I do now. The grass isnt always greener but if you think it's better you can always go.

TTX Carmen are in the same railroad retirement plan railroad employees are in. TTX Carmen get two bonuses a year. TTX Carmen pay $50/month for good health insurance for themselves and their dependents, regardless of family size. TTX Carmen get an annual clothing allowance. Just sayin.

As you know the unions are quiet and not doing anything for there members. They have no power to effect anything that the company does. They have been puppets for many years. Union heads are not like the old days when they would risk going to jail or die for there members. Those day's are gone!

They just let a car department go and replaced with contractors so......

As far as going back good luck maybe you could go work for a contractor but no pensions less pay.

For nek, this is a serious post, I am a real furloughed electrician and I am looking for real answers as it would be in my best interest to come back for a few years, like it or not. Thanks to those who try to provide useful info. Not a troll, not mgmt, not UP.

UP can't legally do that. But.....

UP can reduce agreement staffing levels to the point that it no longer matters if there are unions. By shifting what were agreement jobs to external contractors, UP can effectively bypass the bargaining and striking power of the unions.

Unions may be a necessary evil. They are the only real check on the worst tendencies of UP upper management. Without them, everyone on the railroad would be treated like a new OMT. Speaking from experience.

Being in a "union" is the best job marketing UP could ask for in order to attract blue collar workers.

The reality is UP would have a very tough time finding competent employees in an open market. They'd have to pay a lot more if it wasn't for the unions.

That is not a serious question. Every other day we get some troll on here trashing the unions or passively aggressively wondering if they are going away.

The unions are a joke, no backbone. If the General Chairman can get some change in their pocket the unions would be gone tomorrow. You can always tell when a union rep is lying when his lips are moving.
