It is sad, but complaining here tough is pointless...
Having experience in multiple parts of the world, in my experience (compared to Europe), the US workers have no solidarity at all (look the other way during a layoff), are very afraid of the boss, and only care about themselves individually. The opposite of "United we stand".
Lets say you are MikeL CEO of XXX. Let s say XXX employees work for cheaper and cheaper, getting a zero pay raise year after year, and have less and less benefits and perks, but DO NOT FIGHT YOU about it.
Then, as a good capitalist what do you do? I would say change nothing, enjoy the ride, and cash the annual 32M$ handed to you and the share holders... That s what good capitalists do.
The guy is probably a heartless selfish P.O.S., BUT the main responsible of all this mess is "WE THE PEOPLE" that did nothing at all (selfishness, laziness, or stupidity?) while the elites paid by the corporations dismantled the social framework in front of our eyes. In other words WE asked for it.
(While we were too busy drinking beers in front of the television instead of talking politics, voting, or being engaged).
Now the result is not surprising:
-
Employment regulations - little employees protection.
-
Days off - bare minimum. hard workers dont need days.
-
Pensions - gone. You can now save for it on the paycheck (that did not grow though).
-
Good medical care - nah. Health is a luxury not a right. Too expansive anyway.
-
employment "at will" and no severance package? fair because it goes both ways.
and so on ...
All those bills passed by corporate lobbies with the INDIFFERENCE of "We the people" (or even sometimes their clueless blessing)... Now YOU REAP WHAT YOU SOW. Enjoy the ride. It did not come out of nowhere, you have let it grow for decades.
Destroying the unions was not the smartest move in order to bargain with the boss...
Once it turned into a one on one between the boss and the employee, please tell me who do you think will win the fight (the wolf or the sheep)?
So my advice to the US workers (and even citizens) is that democracy is not for granted and voting (or not) HAS CONSEQUENCES.
IN DEMOCRACY, PEOPLE HAVE THE LEADERS THEY DESERVE.
If you want an hope to have it fixed some day (might be too late for your generation though),
you need to be involved (or even sometimes start by learn about politics, democracy, federating, unions...).
