With Google just breaking ground on a &600 million data center in Henderson/Las Vegas, Centurylink may as well roll it up there.

Verizon in particular got out of the local exchange business, for the most part, almost ten years ago. They sold pretty much all of their territory that wasn't profitable enough(everything but New England and the mid-Atlantic)to Frontier, which is most of the reason Frontier is in trouble now. They couldn't handle it. Windstream is bankrupt. AT+T doesn't want it. CTL is more likely to spin off the residential/consumer business than sell it to anyone.
Frontier is selling their NW (ex-GTE) states. They're done as an acquirer.
It’s hard to say, I could only see CenturyLink selling off their local and I wouldn’t think the markets CTL has plant in would be appealing to the big players like an AT&T or Verizon. I’ve heard Frontier is prohibited from any more acquisitions for the next 4 years. That really only leaves small companies like windstream who seem to be having the same struggle as CTL. Pretty much up in the air.
