Here is what I learned

I was laid off from Longmont last year and it took more than 6 months to find a job in what people call a great job market for job seekers. Here is what I learned:

Seagate is considered old tech and not a great name on your resume unless looking for a job at other old tech companies like ibm, Dell, etc.

2.You will find a job if you move to a different state.

STX is not viewed as a well run tech company so if you are in management this is another negative working against you.
You might make less money but will be happier in a better run company that is growing and not shrinking.
I wish I spent more time keeping my resume up to date and networking before I was laid off.
Companies are not loyal to you so why are employees so loyal to companies. Think about this and may give you a kick to get started on your search.

Good luck everyone at is tough but there. I was able to stay in Colorado by getting a job through networking.

Yep. And if you try to develop any structure and be vocal about process discipline with a bottom up approach you will oftentimes be ridiculed as trying to block progress, sidelined for not having the proper business savvy, and/or even laid off. Request some documentation on a process and it's common to be laughed at or pointed to something a 2nd grader may have wrote 5 years ago.

The comment about Seagate’s reputation and culture is absolutely correct. Interview after interview I’ve been asked the same questions about design controls, etc., but nothing really technical. Seagate is known for hiring smart people but having no discipline or structure.

Simply, this company is toxi and it is known outside the company as well.

Thank you for your blessing, Troll. When a troll makes a troll-like comment, I call it - unlike at STX where everyone is scared to be straight with each other. HDD is dead.

Glad you admit to your near retirement so that all of the "youngsters" understand that you have limited options and just punching the clock until your near retirement day., while we need to look out for our own careers and future.

People like you are what make STX a terrible place to work and limit the growth of a once great company and brand. Blaming "contribution" of work by the employees for your own leadership failings and simply leading my blame and fear. You destroyed the company and the huge drop in revenue to be announced at the end of the month is your failure, not the individuals contributing each and every day.

Ah yes. Just pull the "troll" card when someone responds to your post in a manner lacking the oh-poor-you sentiment that you think you deserve. On a positive note, its nice to see you have moved on and made "something" of yourself. I expect to retire soon and the more you pour into the system the more comfortable I and my cronies will be in our old age.

It's true that the grass not always greener on the other side.

I experience it many times in my career.

When an engineer hits 50, start considering life after engineering. Ones will never know when and what will hit them in the head. Be prepared.

I am saying it has nothing to do with contribution, instead it is about a company with end of life technology with limited market in HDD, the company has showed over 10 years it cannot execute in SSD, the purchase of systems businesses for over a billion were wasted money, and the leadership has been a revolving door of poor leaders with no new thoughts on how to grow the company.

Yes, I could have stayed for a few thousand more per year and be stressed everyday about the next layoff, which is inevitable due to shrinking market and nand supply encroacing and competing against companies like Samsung. It is nice working at a growing company and seeing my RSUs grow, instead of relying on an unsustainable dividend, even if my salary is slightly lower temporarily while I get the stink of Seagate further down on my resume I will make more from stock and total compensation will be higher.

The troll I am responding to must be a 50 plus year old Seagate die hard with end of career options. For those under 50 please take my advice seriously.

So what you are saying is, your experience at Seagate is what ultimately landed you a new job that you sort of like, but looking back you wish you had contributed just a tad more time and effort to helping Seagate succeed because you now realize "good-old-tech-company" Seagate was paying you more to do less.
