Thread regarding Target Corp. layoffs

A well planned and very well implemented strategical game of getting rid-off people without laying them off

Target plays a well planned and very well implemented strategical game of getting rid-off people without laying them off and still save their brand image while showing some savings followed by some profit.

This is how it goes: Every Leader asks his team of Managers to get or generate one weak link from his team who can be the scapegoat to reduce the cost and add to the verticals annual savings. The Managers then get on the task and will identify that one person whom they'd keep away from discussions, keep them busy with useless n manual tasks or don't even force them to work on anything and let their life be cool, allow them take as many leaves and vacations as they want and just spoil them with no work, don't give them any feedback, don't allow/motivate them to up-skill.

By the end of the year, the Manager starts making this candidate feel humiliated by bringing him in front of their Super Boss to present something that they've achieved at work. By then it's too late and it gets proved that that employee is a non-performer. This person then gets the lowest ratings with no bonus and gets a suggested by his/her Manager about the next steps of help thru Performance Improvement Plan (PIP). The Manager softly informs the employee to not to go to the HR to avoid an immediate termination.

This is now a sure shot candidate to go out of the organization due to performance issues without any layoff.

Just ask anyone at unemployment, Target is considered one of the worst corporations in Minnesota for ageism...Target's image is not so great!

Time for local news to pickup the story.

They tried to do this to me. I got a lawyer, 8 months pay plus an additional 2 month severance AND unemployment - didnt need it because I found a new job. If you feel it might be happening to you - get a lawyer fast.

This sounds just like Walmart. I guess all big box retailers work the same.

our etl-log spends at least a couple hours a day in the assets protection office watching cameras then when he sees something he calls the accused in an office and says "it's come to my attention you did this or that it was witnessed by assets protection and is on video"and it's always some trivial thing like you failed to keep 3 points of contact on a ladder while carrying that box down or the placement of your name badge is incorrect or you failed to properly break down your cardboard before placing it in the baler etc. i guess target wants the etl's to harass team members and create a toxic work environment

I was terminated last year under the same scenario. Always great reviews for 35 years and then one-year bad review no raise and was never told in status that I was not performing. Terminated me after a few months, denied me unemployment. Now they are doing the same thing to 2 other people from that area. Long-timers. But its a good economy now so get out or retire early take your pension and get a stressfree job. There is a great life after Target if your area s---s.

My husband of 28 years, a dedicated Tgt employee of 25 years, took his life when this happened to him. My sons and I are barely making it now. Grief is inconceivable. Life is so hard and unpredictable. No guarantees.

Toxic work environments hinders performance and makes good employees targets for poor reviews due to incompetent managers.

It’s called the vitality curve. It’s been around for over 30 years. Like it or not it’s in every corporation, it’s real, it works and it’s not pretty. Every HR team is out there identifying their top performers and their bottom performers. The top are rewarded, the bottom are pushed out. It’s not new and certainly not a lay-off.

What you are describing is very similar to what happened when I was with Target about 10 years ago. We would have management meetings and the store team leader would identify a "Blocker" who was an ETL or Team Lead who just happened by coincidence to be off the day of the meeting. The "Blocker" was a longer term employee who was making too much money and could be replaced by someone cheaper. Within 3 to 6 months of the meeting the "Blocker" would end up being terminated by means of lower ratings and a final PIP. I voiced my objections to the process and left Target before I too became a "Blocker." A lot of good team members were forced out because of this process.
