Thread regarding Thomson Reuters layoffs

Offered a tech role in Toronto, should I take it?

Got an offer for tech role in Toronto. But this post has me worried - https://www.cnn.com/2018/12/04/media/reuters-layoffs/index.html

I have also heard that if your salary is high then you can be laid off. Reading through all the Thomson Reuters layoff posts, I feel that there is no job security. Is it that bad where you are constantly worried that you can be invited for "special meeting" or don't know whether you will have a job the next day?

Thomson Reuters says Toronto is hub for legal so nothing will happen. Should I join just for the high salary? There is another opportunity where salary is bit less but job looks more stable. Don't want to be out looking for job again soon. I have a young family so job stability matters a lot.

If you want stability then don’t go to TR. What would be your mental state if you were laid off during Thanksgiving/holidays with next month to two being very lull?

I say go for the money for the short-term only, but keep your other options open if you can. Expect to be laid off, as that's just plain realistic with TR anymore. There is nothing long-term about the company any longer. There are too many deep cuts in departments that are already under-funded, under-staffed, and over-committed. Projects are being done with no quality-control, with corners cut, and with upper management constantly saying "do more with less!"

If you’re already in TO, take it. When you’re laid off, you’ll find something else, as you seem to be saying your skills are in demand.

If you’re thinking of moving to TO to take this job, you’d be insane.

Even the directors are just managing the decline, the outsourcing the layoffs.

I personally would not recommend someone to work at TR anymore. There is such a shortage of help and zero guidance. I’ve worked here for almost 22 years in legal tech in Eagan. Go for stability somewhere.

I think you should take the offer. Layoff can happen at any companies. But don't hope for long term stability and plan something big like buying a house.

If you are planning to relocate to Toronto for this job, I wouldn't do it. TR is far from stable. I honestly don't think they know what the heck they are doing. If you already live in Toronto, not sure what the job market is like there. Might not be as risky - maybe you could find something relatively fast if anything happens. I had a lengthy career at TR and it is only a shell of a company it once was. Morale was low before all of the layoffs/site closures took place, I can't imagine what it is like now.

Thomson Reuters also told the Rochester site that it was a center of excellence for Legal Technology.

It shutters this June.

Everything is getting offshored as soon as they find a way.

Run fro this offer, and don't look back.

TR is not stable. Tech roles are being outsourced or offshored in large numbers.
