Thread regarding Barnes & Noble layoffs

Thank you, Mr. Riggio!

For those of us still with the company, or those of us who were employed by Barnes & noble for many years, i'd like to thank Len for giving us bookworms a retail haven of our own.

During the glory days, you'd be hard pressed to find a better group of customers, booksellers & managers.

In fact, one particular manager used to call us: Odd but lovable.

We were a ragtag group of intelligent, somewhat unambitious, practicing artists and writers, and Barnes & Noble offered us a job that was several notches above other retailers.

Thank you, Len, Steve, Mr. Botini, and countless others who were part of the family.

THANK YOU MR. RiGGIO !

for showing us who you really are.

I get it. It’s your company. We are paid to make you rich. People who put in 10,15,20, plus , years. Meant nothing to you. You had no more use for them. Now you want minimum wage kids who could care less. Your customers notice. The career employees kept the customers coming in the door. Now they could care less, just like the uninterested kids manning the store.BN was a destination. It was a the place to go.you made it a place no one wants to go anymore. We all know you don’t care. As long as that dividend check clears. Sad. Pathetic. Your legacy could have lived on. You’ve turned it into an industry joke. Do you care. I think not. You have your money. You were once respected. You’re now a buffoon who really didn’t care about employees. We were buffoons for believing you.you will go on. Your ex employees will move on. And BN will be a footnote in history. A history of failed retailers.

Len and Steve built this company. They did well, they built the company up to something that became a mover and shaker of the book trade. Steve suffered a terrible personal loss, and went into early retirement. Len kept things going; if he made bad decisions, so be it. I think the worst decision he made was hiring Demos. Black Monday was on Demos, and he ended up in the East River for it.

I won't hear anything said wrong or bad about Len without stepping up to defend him.

I remember rumors back in the 80s and 90s that the Riggios had “underworld “connections.

I did not believe it then.

And I certainly do not believe it now.

The “mob” is much more organized and treats their employees like “family “😉

No ordering supplies? You can’t give customers a bag? People collecting over $1 million per quarter? I won’t spend a dime in that company ever again.

Those dividends are just proof he doesn’t give a c-ap about the business anymore. Looking to get paid and get out. Sell it or close it Len....

Seriously, you are thanking this guy after what he has done? May 3rd the company will pay out 15 cent dividend on each shares of stock held. Riggio has 8,594,491 shares. So come May 4, Len will receive a $1,289,173 check. And he gets this every quarter. BN has paid out a 15 cent dividend since August 2015. That is 16 fiscal quarter. Roughly Len has pulled in $20 million dollars since that date in dividends. How much money could they make if they cut the dividend and put it back into the stores and staff? Yup, So I guess Len does deserve our thanks. He has had so rough.

We thank you Riggios.

We thank you for the old days of BN. When it was a viable, thriving company. The old commercials on TV made me want to shop there & work there. They treated employees like family. Those days are long gone. Cant blame them. They are beholden to stockholders. The company made money, didn’t make enough money to make everyone happy. Sales plans that jumped so high they couldn’t be met. Letting long time, full time career employees go , replaced by part timers at minimum pay. Hours cut back, customers complaining they’re not getting help, sales down. ( of course Sales are down. All those people who regularly purchased from your company, their friends, family, that were let go, no longer buy anything from you) Bad decisions and greed, never making enough money, did the company in.The BN Of Old is long gone.

I thank the Riggios for the old days. I’ve no respect for how they treated the employees who helped establish their business and made them who they were.

The Riggios arguing new hires a favor. By keeping them few hours and minimum-wage, they are letting them know there is no career with this company .

VERY LITTLE cash. Hard to make much with few hrs and minimum wage.

Anyone coming into this comatose company is either desperate for any job or they're just bored and want a little quick cash.

Steve was amazing, and it's a shame his personal tragedies led him to retire. The company peaked with him and it has been a long downhill slide ever since then.

Len, however, is massively incompetent. The string of CEOs they've selected since then have been unmitigated disasters starting with William Lynch. They sunk a billion dollars on an eReader no one ever wanted when we could have been selling branded merch from other manufacturers the entire time. But no, we had to develop our own, third-rate knockoff, at least some of which had been full of malware until they were "patched."

Bring back Steve. Beg him on your hands and knees. It's too late, though. This beast is mortally wounded. The only reason we're still above water is that the economy is barely holding on, but there's a storm a-coming.

If you think this company will make it through another downturn like 2007-2008, think again.

That DM is the WORST- she is so fake and lies continually. She's thrown so many people under the bus and she s---s at her job. I'm surprised she wasn't fired years ago. Everyone in our store has laughed at all of her stupid ideas.

Still some great people in the Framingham, MA area.

Our DM is a fantastic woman, and the old Regional was excellent, too.

There are other minimum wage jobs out there! You don’t need to stay at B&N.

Good old Lenny-

he thinks that being friends with Tony Bennett and funding most of the Columbus Day Parade, so he can be the grand marshalHe’s going to improve his image. His employees know his image. And with sites like this ,the whole world will ,as well !

I totally agree. The Riggio‘s are garbage with the way they treated their employees. Back in the day they were stand up guys. Now they don’t care about the business at all I wish they were just fold up their tents and crawl back under their rock. I would like nothing better than to see this one’s great company put out of its misery.

What kind of pile of sh!t is this?!!

He will sellout given the first opportunity. Luckily, no one seems to be stupid enough to buy these worthless bricks of cement. Unless one of those id--ts who bought that ridiculous member card has millions to throw away.

Only one I respect is Mr. Botini.

He saw how things were going and left before he had to be a part of it. He warned me about these days we’re on now , so I got out too. Grateful to him , his ethics and honesty.
