Good People who gave several decades of their life to Ford left un-ceremoniously on a days notice. No formal communication sent thanking them and acknowledging their contributions. Rest of us come to know about their termination after they are gone. Then, Un-settling thought creeps in--- this can happen to "ME" in next couple of months.
Layoffs are part of modern work life and well understood and accepted by all. However, leadership (company) can at least provide a dignified exit. Why not give people two weeks notice. Acknowledge their exit by recognizing their contributions. If we can not create sweet moment, do everything possible NOT to create bitter memory. Bodies going out the door are "human beings", NOT headcounts.
Many people are now keeping their desks cleaned and staying "Packed".. living in anxiety, fear and suspicion. Employees who survive this round will have difficult time trusting the leadership, having seen the lack of compassion and sensitivity in the way people were exited.
If employees do not trust the company, why will Customers ?? Henry Ford created Trust DNA without knowing the "Trust" lingo. Now we have the outside consultants crowding up our conference rooms creating "Trusted Company" strategies while employees are loosing trust and confidence.
