Thread regarding CenturyLink layoffs

For people who are leaving CenturyLink

Why have you made the decision to leave? Is there any particular reason that made you decide that you simply couldn't take it anymore?

Left 18 months ago with 46 years of service. New boss was absolutely the worst boss I had ever seen at the company. Boss had screaming fits and changed the entire job overnight. When I was told I was not there to help people anymore, just to get rid of calls as fast as possible to take the next one I was done. I wanted a buyout, got screwed out of one so just left. Best decision ever, and I was one of those afraid of changing my life by retiring.

I believe a total of 5 kids, her husband a repair tech with 5-6 years at the time went to management. I'll give him credit though he was a hard worker.

"A manager at centurylink hired her daughter in law who before her first day went on maternity leave because of bed rest ordered by her doctor. She got 3 months pay and time off after the birth, but before returning was pregnant again... this went on for over 6 years. Never worked 1 Day and earned 56,000 a year and then took a buy out for 12,000 to leave. This was back in 2001-2007"

Did she keep the 6 kids?

There are examples everywhere of people who have abused every system.

I was pushed out after 20 years, my department was being replaced with contractors. So I had 2 choices take a package or get written up for anything and everything so I could be fired. My last wright up was for being to tall...(I SWEAR TO GOD) and that was a safety violation because I could bump my head. Before that was pictures of me wiping sweat off my forehead in 100+ degree weather. The manager stated that I looked like I was going to pass out, did they come over to check on me? NO just a safety wright up. Did I fight the wright up yes and won but it was just a matter of time, if they want you out they will find a way.

I am as happy as hell to get out of there when I did.

I got out 4 years ago and was with the company for 12 years as a tech support rep for the residential side. I saw the writing on the wall long before that. They finally closed the call center in Carlisle PA. They are trying to sell the building for 2 million dollars but no one wants it. Its been left go for to long and it is a dump. I started to get anxiety as soon as I had to hit the call button as every call you were being screamed at by unhappy customers. The company is a joke and management did nothing or did not understand the issues customers were complaining about. Best decision of my life was when I quit. I now work an internal tech support job with a small company and am happy now. Anyone who decides to stay is blind. Get out now to keep your sanity there is no future at Centurylink.

5/13/19, I'm leaving bc I'm 65, I'm still here waiting for a package. I've put in my time, (32 years) and now its time for me to leave. I would just like to do a EVSPP to save a job and get a package if I can.

Didn't exactly CHOOSE to leave, read the writing on the wall & volunteered for the next round of separation, which came 4 months later.

Everyone that worked with me are gone. But replaced with triple the legacy L3 folks and contractors doing everything so the company isn’t liable.

They are breaking the agreements with our federal customers by not complying with existing agreements. They don’t feel anyone should be so big that it would require standby techs and immediate response.

Some are jumping ship and really should because they are the number guys. They know what’s coming and they’re not wanting jail time. Investigators are looking at how this whole acquisition went about and how it’s affected legacy CTL and Qwest personnel.

I was asked to violate my GSD contract agreement today which could have cost me access forever. I did not do it and reported it accordingly so next week could be my last. Never for no one will I lie, cheat and manipulate the law or my agreements. Keep fighting a good fight and possibly with the help of God you will prevail!

I have been in BMO for many years. Back in the day, we were a good company with a good reputation and had many customers that loved us and were loyal. There were 20+ men in our dept and we could have used more.

Then the first thing they did wrong, was rather than increase trip charge and labor gradually, oh no, they jump trips from $75 to $110 and labor from $85hr to $150hr. That warmed everyone right up to us. That was the beginning of the end.

Then, send letters out telling customers we are discontinuing selling this and that brand PBX, When they just spend thousands, hundreds of thousands and even millions on one. We arent talking a couple hundred customers, we are talking thousands. Then to add insult to injury, they approach these people and try to sell them another new system to replace the one there is nothing wrong with, that they just bought, except we don't want to sell it anymore. We all know how that went.

Then came the first layoffs because people started leaving because of price and shedding brands. Then, customers started saying, we love you guys and your service, but hate your pricing.

Next, we charged too much and couldn't provide timely sevice because of staff shortage. More customers left. Then it became, we love you guys but hate your company and poor service. More customers left, more layoffs. Eventually all but a couple customers left as maintenance contracts expired and competitors took advantage of our high prices and poor service. Only those with no choice stayed.

Then, when things hit rock bottom, someone decides we want to sell CPE again and try to be a real company again. But it's too little too late.

Now, there are a couple techs left in each area and no customers. None. Even those with rose colored glasses have come to realize we are finished. We sell nothing. We can't. Heck, we don't even have sales people. Oh yeah, they will tell you we do, but you never see them. Dialtone customers have no idea who their rep is because every time they call an order in, the previous rep is gone because he or she couldn't meet sales numbers. Noooo, go figure. Have a potential customer ask them to send the sales rep out to show them equipment and see what happens. Crickets.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out these level 3 guys aren't going to pay techs to do nothing once they can figure out how to shed the couple governmental customers that have maintenance customers they have to have someone available to respond to. Contractors would make the most sense.

Luckily, i do not need to look for a job because i am old enough to retire. I am just hanging in here hoping to get a package, which would just be a bonus. I feel bad for the younger guys who were hoping to get a career here.

Close to 20 years with this company, almost 25 years in this industry and all I see day in and day out across the board from everyone thats staying or leaving is a consistent lack of job security, financial security, dwindling work, lack of direction from leadership, too much unknown, no longer feel valued as an employee, feeling much more of a liability than an asset. We are trying to rebrand ourselves as a “technology company” the only problem there is we aren’t advancing in technology as our competitors or businesses within the same industry. Plenty of other reasons too, but those are pretty much the main ones why I’m leaving.
