Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

Why are people not learning new skills?

Seriously people, it's just a matter of time before 90 percent of people who currently work at GM and the entire auto industry are left without a job. Automation, outsourcing, lower sales... Everybody can see where this is headed.

Learn a new skill and start looking for a job someplace else. That's the best thing you could do for yourself and your family right now.

People that we're fired was a way for Mary to flex , drive up the stock and say to Wall Street , look what I did ! I am doing something! What she should have done was boost morale within GM and offered furlough days as a cost cutting measure if the company is that financially hurting, in this case GM has made good solid profit. Her mass firing spree has achieved nothing but only has created division and contempt for the company and it's customers , this is not a winning way. GM dosent know how to compete and it appears as though they are grassping at straws , now warranty is spinning out of control , massive recalls on vehicles , a string of negative press globally , I would suggest Mary's time is up and it's time for a replacement but who would that person be? The CFO under Mary ? God help us all ! It's interesting that the tax payers gave these companies 80 billion dollars to save the industry but yet it has only become worse , we're did 80 billion dollars go? It certainly didn't save our jobs now did it?

Is the OP suggesting that people were fired based on lack of skill or training or continuing education? We know that's not the case.

What happens is mgrs overload the skilled productive people so they rarely have a moment to do anything but the old things. The same mgrs block these peoples requests to move to other areas so they can grow. Then before they know it a decade or more has passed.

Becoming a trans person of color is more helpful than skills at advancing your career at a woke company like GM... because diversity.

As far as what GM is trying to accomplish, they don’t know their a-- from a hole in the ground. Is it about saving the planet by producing electric vehicles that won’t sell and there is no infrastructure to support? (0-0-0) Is it about padding financial stats that are turning down because of the sub-prime lending practices of GM financial over the past decade to increase “sales”? Or is it about “leaning out” the white collar workforce that has been the backbone of the positive growth they’ve had over the past 7 years because outsourcing their IT proved to be their biggest waste of money? The one thing they have been trying to accomplish is increasing shareholder confidence, but despite their layoffs and “diverse” workplace sales are down, employees are disgruntled and their feminist figure piece is getting ready to pull the thread on her golden parachute because their stock price is currently valued at $37 per share.

I proudly parked my Ford at the outskirts of the parking lot. You reap what you sew GM. Keep investing in COTS packages that tie your developers hands behind their back and keep creating a culture of fear with your HR based layoffs that stifle any real innovation.

Staff your whole IT organization with H1B cast system indoctrinated workers who have a firm grasp on what the American consumer wants. Pretty soon your stock price is going to match your market share... this time the American people won’t bail you out, no matter how many tanks you built back in WW2. Disgusting, everything about it.

how about you go to school for a job area that actually hires people. As of right now, computer science is huge. Kids with no experience are getting jobs for 70k. Or how about going into engineering? you will never not make money. How do i know? because I was laid off in the trades, and went to school. Yeah, I was twice the age of everyone else, but I was determined not to let them show me up! Now, regardless of my age I have skills in multiple areas that force me to be employable regardless of my age. If you have the skills people want, you'll be hired no matter your age.

To be frank, GMIT needs another round of layoffs if they wish to be truly innovative. After having worked there for a few years, I can say it is too big to succeed. Large IT without streamlined process will always mean slow IT, which is the antithesis of innovation.

All you really "need" is bread, water, and a blanket for when it gets cold sleeping in the park.

Everything else is a "want."

Are you serious? You are going to go with 90 percent? Please justify your math behind that number.

Going back to school in fine but see what they have at a community college or if going to a university get a certificate in something. Less course's and much cheaper. There is always teaching or healthcare - nursing, could always start your own business based on a hobby you like. Other things to consider is reducing your costs, that's a big one for most people. What do you really need? Needs not wants.

I agree that people should never stop learning as that is the best way to get run over and become obsolete quickly. But there has to be a balance. It doesn't make sense for someone in their 40s/50s to go back to school as the odds that a company will want to pick them up after they get whatever their degree might be is pretty slim. Need to be smart about reskilling and be realistic.

Alot of people that we're there are currently learning and wanted to do more to change the skill into more , I personally know alot of people I worked with young and older that were doing this. I agree with the other post about double down in the hopes of retaining employment , Rediculous , if the color of your shirt is off then you are fired, wake up!

Isn't there an ongoing story about how expensive college is today and how salaries are not covering the cost, yet workers are supposed to double down and go back to school in the hope that they will be able to stay employed? Seems pretty stupid to me, especially as an older worker who has seen many qualified and skilled workers let go, because of their age.
