Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

When can we expect more layoffs?

Do we have any ideas yet? Or are we in a "wait and see" phase right now?

Older people are the only group it's ok to target to get rid of and not have to worry about consequences.

Offering the vsp to everyone would be the only fair way to do it, instead of just trying to get rid of an unfavored group.

Offer the VSP to everyone this time!

So they're still targeting the older folks for "voluntary" separation, huh?

The age discrimination never ends...

So voluntary separation followed by layoffs, on pretty much the same calendar as before?

Sept. Will start with a new early retirement offer that is supposed to be better than the last one. I don’t know if layoffs will follow, but I’m sure many of the old timers that were on the fence will take it this time

Everything on this web site is rumor.

If you want specifics, go ask your director what he knows.

The answer stares everyone in the face. If all contract are gone, you may be among the few as well.

The economy is swinging the other way, as the pendulum always does. While the economy contracts, so does head count.

Look dipsh*ts, I've mentioned this three times, and was voted to oblivion because of ignorance. Let decades of GM experience, tell you how GM works. It's no loss to me, after two decades I've moved on to a 40% premium paying job, the best of multiple job offers.

Count the department blue badges. Now count the yellow badges. If you don't have a buffer of contract personnel in your group, your job while it may not be at risk immediately, lacks a buffer and could be at risk in time. GM can NOT come after salary until contract are first departed. GM always, always, always, keeps a 80/20 salary/contract ratio. If no buffer, realize it for what it is, or put your head in the sand.

No skin off my nose. I'm rolling in a wage GM couldn't offer, and benefits that makes GM laughable., but I learned their game.

Use it, don't, I don't care. It's only your life, and livelihood.

I see a lot of a---kissing years and the bosses seems to like them because they’re like their asses kissed but anybody with any sense of self respect and brands would not do that so what do you do s--- it up

Stop working, and kiss your boss every day like Mark Reuess kiss Barra. You will survive. That's GM culture.

"Hardly workin'. It's time to play ping pong."

They could lay off half of IT and no one would notice.

That group is bloated beyond belief.

Confirmed August for IT, at least planned right now. Coming from a reliable Level 9 source who was right about the Feb 4th date.

Q3 for IT. Budgets already slashed 30% across the board and not a lot of progress has been made to meet those new numbers. Hope they'll target the right folks in Austin this time around

1bve - Contractor people did alot of work , they always cut them first before they can go after the salaried folks. Now I think all that are salary are going to be watched more closely and scrutinized even more because of less people , you will all do more with less like in a retail store Ex) CVS d--g store , they operate with hardly anyone working in the store, less than 20 years ago they had alot of employees on the floor. More with less people and a pay cut to boot. What will happen when gas climbs and GM has no cars to offer ? You will buy a Honda 😉

Layoffs at the tech center for pre production start the week after next. Engineering budgets were slashed by 50 percent. There will be almost zero pre production test vehicles build this year.

“Fired” not “layed off.” They don’t plan to call you back.

I was one of many laid off in Feb but have new opportunities ahead of me. I have talked with EGMs (not mine but different group) that were already told to look for internal jobs bc their group will get slashed summer (mix bn July or September). Knowing Mary Barra, I wouldnt be surprised if it happens right after new Corvette unveil to offset the PR

In a group of 20, you'll see 2 or 3 or 4 people disappear over the next year.

Itll be slow and quiet, not a big boom like in March where they let a lot of people go over just a few days.

When, will probably be ongoing - silently.

Whether you could be affected will be determined by how many contractors exist in your group. If you have few to no contractors, layoffs are still possible. And no not joking. You want contractors to come back abound.
