i've been an employee for both STX and WD- currently neither. i ask about the STX 16TB because the conference call implicitly said it was not HAMR. WD has a 15TB host managed SMR and 14TB conventional. Just trying to figure out what this STX drive is. i could see 9 platters but that's not particularly interesting.
CEO did say they announced it last month and began shipping/ramp up. Expects it to be the number one revenue generating product by this time next year. Also said that platform would support HAMR when "it is ready".
i will point out in WD's earning reports, they also claimed 16TB conventional and 18TB SMR this calendar year with "energy assist". Strange they didn't explicitly say mamr.
i expect both are having wishful thinking. just trying to figure out when the sh*t hits the fan so i can bail on my stock options.
