Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

When did things start to change?

When did working at General Motors turned from being enjoyable to being one of the worst employment options? All the stress, uncertainty, frustration, anticipation of bad things to happen... So much bad, so little good happening here lately.

When did it all go so wrong?

Nothing is happening at GM , it's all hot air with zero results. Meanwhile jobs are disappearing at an alarming rate , other countries are giving GM incentives and big tax breaks to do business abroad, our government apparently isn't doing enough to keep the business here in the US. It's heavy finger pointing from Mary that it's all the UAWs to blame !? This has nothing to do with diversity , that is the illusion that they want people to believe so they can continue to move jobs and money around period , an absolute distraction. Pure and simple web of lies and BS

I am writing this as male who worked at GM for 3+ years. For those saying it was MB feminist agenda, I know quite a few very smart female EGMs (early -mid 40s max) who were deemed "rising stars" that were laid off the same week that i was too.

I probably agree with CFO sentiment knowing her coldness when interviewed about layoffs, her answer was regarding stock prices

Things are changing guys id--t Trump with his trade wars and Trump is not going to back off from his plan because your Saul is show Intel for him to win the next election so he’ll keep on pushing for the trade wars because it sounds good just like the wall sounds good but nothing is going to happen. So as though Trump is pushing for the trade wars with China...It will only accelerate the slowdown in the economy which I am forecasting and it will go into a deep recession into 2024 so that’s what I see as happening starting from now till 2024 so that is what I think is going to happen

Mary the Social Justice Warrior Princess began the downward spiral, and now Chainsaw Dhivya is doing her best Al Dunlap impersonation to destroy the company.

Zero sales

Zero stock price

Zero employees

I think it was when Mary took over. There were all of a sudden mandates to bring level 8 and above managers to 50% women - which Im ok with as long as they can do the job. In our group, we had middle of the road engineers that were level 7s for 10+ years all of a sudden being promoted and put on a pedestal. Honestly, they were not the right people to be people leaders.

At the end of 2017, there were a lot of org changes that didnt make sense I think in preparation for upcoming layoffs. The last piece was when the new CFO came in. All of a sudden, GM doesnt want to make cars that appeal to millennials and gain customers for life instead focus on short-term profits in terms of higher price SUVs and Trucks. Also, this whole 'zero crashes, zero emissions and zero congestion' mantra seemed to appear out of nowhere.

I think Alfred Sloan is rolling over in his grave with all that has transpired in the last few years. GM has chosen a path for lower quality and maximum profitability and is trying to use its gender friendly environment to artificially lift itself up in the press.

They were definitely working on the downsizing plan before September.

While the big public 15% layoff happened in early 2019, they had a quiet 10% layoff going on the whole year in 2018.

They were going department by department, laying off 10%, but they never announced anything.

I think another big change occurred when the new CFO took over on September 1, 2018. It was only two months later (Halloween day) when the whole downsizing plan first came out to employees via email. I think she was the driver behind the whole layoff thing. And I fear there will be more to come.

The impetus for the slide in engineering was really when John Calabrese retired. Like him or hate him, he was a firm and passionate leader. He asked a lot of those working for him, and he was focused on delivering for the customer. Instead of a passionate engineer with vast experience who rose through the ranks, we received an expanded good-old-boys management structure. Mary has seemed content to let Reuss and his boy's club have their way with product, while she socially engineers the rest of GM.

Things shifted when the recalls and ignition switch lawsuit news died down and Mary was able to put her mark on things. As much as it pains me to say it, all of the signs are her being agenda-driven. Case in point: What percentage of "Executive Business Managers" are male (these being the 7th level employees that are hand-selected to be the always-there gopher for unclassifieds, with a certain 8th level coming out of it)?

Combine that agenda with the focus on GM becoming Tesla, the focus on designing, building, and selling the worlds best vehicles got thrown out the window and run over a long time ago.

$2 BILLION per year on autonomous, and our brand new trucks are lagging the competition, Global B is a disaster, and we're cutting engineering budgets. Something tells me that is NOT a plan to win.

If you don't conform to the leftist agenda GM will make autonomous cars that will take you to the reprogramming detention camps.

Feminist, green, social engineering is all over the GM website at wwww.gm.com

It's a political agenda and mary sure did put all her eggs in the leftist disrupter basket.

Now an engineer from Apple was k--led when auto pilot failed in his Tesla , very horrible. I do not want autonomous anything , ever . More power to you if you do ,but not me.

Don't blame Trump! The situation at GM lies firmly with Barra. She had a vision of an all electric future with autonomous cars. That vision is now showing its short-sightedness. Tesla sales are plummeting and Wall Street is now understanding that autonomous doesn't work if snow covers lane markings. Meanwhile, Barra has neglected the truck side of the business. GM hasn't had a 15 series van in years and has no plans to bring a new one out. The fullsize pickups are not keeping up with the F150 or the Ram trucks. The M van market was abandoned. Trucks are the biggest money makers and SHE has not been investing in them but has been putting all her eggs in the "disrupter" basket. Have you seen the www.gm.com website? "We're developing the female leaders of the future" What?!? I thought we were supposed to develop vehicles! She is a blatant social engineer and a s-xist.

When Trump put a 25% tariff on steel and aluminum and started a trade war with China, that scared every company in America and they started to change their plans.

When Trump was elected , last May 11th 2018 also when tariff discussions began. He opened threats that nobody has touched in 30 or 40 years. California hates him , Marry hates him and so does the auto industry. Jerry Brown out in California loves Tesla and Marry wants to be Tesla , I guess California dictates to the country all the rules , lots of finger pointing and the fear is China will over take the US auto industry welp , mission accomplished ! Thanks to a divided America that just can not stick together , oh well !

You have a CEO that has a strict agenda with a democratic party , her and our president don't see things eye to eye , she is to busy of shoring American jobs meanwhile Ford and FCA are trying to rejuvenate our industry. China is now #1 in total global auto sales all while Marry is preoccupied with diversity in the work place and making her way into politics. FCA and Ford are making investment in Detroit and Michigan in a large way , GM is throwing out a bone. Electric trucks aren't going to save GM , the management of the company is going in circles , first we aren't building cars and now here is a new Corvette and Camaro , now we are building cars again !? GM is not a consistent company and the reality is all electric on the road is not going to happen overnight.

I wonder what news they got in mid 18 that made them change their plans?

Bad sales forecasts?

Up until 2017 and mid 18 things seemed ok , August of 18 started to become very uncomfortable. Alot of fresh people hired and then all of a sudden fired , in Pontiac there we're renovations starting and then completely halted? All of a sudden people are moving to Warren!? They actually started moving out the old cubes and construction of the new floor plan in Pontiac. Why such a quick change of plans?
