Thread regarding Barnes & Noble layoffs

MORE LAYOFFS IN MAY

Word for NY is they will try to be a little more discreet this time around. Look for any long-term co-workers and AMs and MMs to disappear without any notice.

MAY is a few days from being over. What happened to the layoffs?

Guess this site will have someone posting a JUNE LAYOFFS ARE COMING! thread, soon.

Where?

No where.

Not happening.

Stop scaring people.

No one is denying that happened. Some of us would like specifics on these so-called layoffs. If you have real information, spill it. If you're trolling, go away.

This layoff boogeyman is a joke.

Tell that to the 3000 “laid off” last year.

They've been talking any cutting stores down to one ASM for YEARS. Like, since the recession. That is not new news. I'm not shocked they're whittling them down as they can.

As for cutting loose a bunch of "MMs", Sales/Inventory Managers, you have to be joking.

So, they've already culled most of the non-management full timers except in larger markets and a few other exceptions. How does this hypothetical store where you have a SM, an ASM, and I don't know how many SIMs (one? zero?) operate? I guess you can work the SM 120 hrs a week if you want since they are salaried, but everyone else punches a clock. It doesn't add up. Who are the key carriers?

You have to have an MOD team to operate the store. In my experience this is minimum 4 key carriers, preferably 5 or more depending on volume. You can deputize trusted part-time employees to make up for scheduling gaps, but you can't tell me that stores are going to be run by an SM, one ASM, maybe one other manager, and a bunch of high school/college kids and retirees fresh off the street. There's no way LP would leave the cash office up to John and Jane Doe Part Timer permanently.

This layoff boogeyman is a joke. Come back with some real news.

“I get it, but come on. People's livelihoods are at stake. All I have to say is update your resume and start looking yesterday.”

Anyone worried about their livelihood would’ve done something to find a steady reliable new employer by now.

Anyone just “ seeing what happens” deserves what they get!

“I think this is either from bored employees or vindictive ex-employees.”

They have EVERY right to be vindictive!

I personally know TWO assistants that were let go in February. They’re being sneaky about it now. It’s not 3000 at a time, like last time ! Tell those 2 it was fear mongering !

I've been looking for proof, hard, and I have none. The only things I've seen online are vague assumptions. People said something was coming again in February, as well, and nothing happened.

If you have details, pony, up. "Word on the street from NY" isn't very convincing.

I think this is either from bored employees or vindictive ex-employees.

Not how real this is if you're still calling them "MM". It's "Sales/Inventory Manager". I get it that people may refuse to change terminology, like CRM to CBDM, but if you're claiming to have the inside scoop from NY it's more convincing if you know the name of the actual position.

People in the other thread didn't know what an MBDM is and started flipping out over nothing.

Sometimes I think most the posters here are ex-employees sowing disinformation.

If this is really happening, it must be via phone/back channels and not via email because I have access to SM email and I've seen nothing.

Unless they haven't told the SMs yet, and last time they definitely knew for a while.

Corporate is well aware of this site . Some are angry that May lay offs have leaked. “Damage control “ is a priority this time around.

Keep posting. They’re more angry that the TRUTH is on this site !

I’ll make damn sure to not let the next round in May to roll out and not get reported. I’ll be very vocal about it and a good friend works for the local newspaper. Let them try it !

Regarding the OP: I wouldn't be at all surprised if the company, rather than mass-murdering thousands of bookseller's careers, tries a more stealthy method. MMs are pretty important to the running of the stores, particularly since a lot of the murdered were receiving managers--still one of the most breathtakingly stupid decisions in a company already legion with them. Moreover, MMs are pretty cheap, and thus a good value.

ASMs, on the other hand, are well paid, and there're way too many of them. Instead of costly lay-offs, I see a bunch of them being performanced-out, thus saving plenty of money in severance and also keeping another mass lay-off out of the media.

Leadership isn't a spreadsheet! But a spreadsheet and number crunching is all this company has anymore. Watching conversion numbers live time like that is going to do anything. If they fire the longer serving mm's, it's going to be bad for a lot of stores. Some of them are really the bandaid on the bullet hole when you have a poor sm. But, you can kind of feel it coming.

My MM is a real jerk.

Thinks he’s a ladies Man. Married with two kids. His wife must be real stupid to put up with them. Always coming on to all the girls. Invites everybody out for drinks after work. I think he’s an alcoholic. Talks about drinking all the time. This next round is going to hit those diehard, hunger zone the worst. But if they are still there and did nothing to get out, maybe they know BN is the best they’ll ever do. That’s not even sad, it’s pathetic. Couldn’t happen to a “nicer”guy.

but really does the company even care? No!!

Of course not. If they cared they wouldn’t of gotten rid of their seasoned employees that knew what they were doing. Kept the part timers, hired more part-timers, and nobody knows what’s going on.

There is no way to run a business. And now these mo--ns have found that out.

Can only thin the herd so much. Company still needs people with a key to open and close the store. Even with reduced hours, you can only cut so much. 2 managers days work, but really does the company even care? No!!

what about the lead cashwrap people at bigger stores that were saved at last layoff? Still some left and getting full benefits. are they not long for this retail world?

That’s how our MM is .

They just delegate the work to us part-timers anyway. The manager can just tell us to do it. Laziest position in the store. Wish they got rid of our two MMs & Kept our receiving manager. receiving room looks like c-ap. Can’t find anything. Unopened boxes everywhere.
