Thread regarding ConocoPhillips layoffs

Energy industry

If you had a son or daughter about to go to college, would you encourage, or discourage them in planning for a career in the oil industry? I may not recommend against engineering or geoscience, but think I’d push them away from focusing in petro engineering or oil&gas geoscience. You?

I agree with imo's reply if your kids want to be Geos (definitely don't go O&G) but if they prefer engineering I would say no to the O&G industry (unless your kids will be in the top 1% of their class from a top university). I have 2 kids, one went O&G with mechanical eng degree and one went non-O&G with PE degree.

The non-O&G job is much more stable, lower stress and better benefits.

Steer them into hydrology with a minor in geology. No need for geo’s as oil finders or in shale exploitation. Water will be the new oil. Already is.
