Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

The possibilities

Apple could have waited a few more weeks for the FTC trial verdict. It wouldn't have materially changed their overall 5G picture by much. My 2cents, it wasnt intel bailing or 5G that made it change their mind..

Possibilities:

  1. maybe they got wind of the Judges decision in FTC trial, ruling for Qualcomm, in which case they would have to settle with qcom for worser terms

  2. They were able to bargain down, and come up with reasonable licence terms, that made it worth not taking the risk, and waiting for the trial decision.

Apple is going to buy Netflix and due to the bandwidth demand they need 5G in all devices by 2022. They cannot wait any longer, check the recent run-up in NFLX

Intel realized making a profit in the future will be tough after Apple has their own modem. I'm not sure we'll ever see our 5G modem in a future Apple phone, maybe just one generation if we're lucky

Apple put a value on an externally sourced 5g modem of $2.50 with this settlement. That's the premium for 5g over 4g.

Brilliant on Mav's part.

No. This gives them “a second bite at the Apple”. Pun intended. They secured a sweeter deal in case QTL comes out unscathed. If QTL gets neutered, they get to renegotiate. Apple isn’t stupid.
