Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

Unemployment done, what's next?

Well, the five month unemployment period is about over and done for some of us. No job yet, but not by lack of trying. No extension, economy is great says everyone with a job.

Anyone else in the same boat? What are you doing to weather the storm?

Reminds me of someone I know. Take out a 30 year mortgage, pays off 25 or so years, gets laid off and can't find a job that pays respectable. Bank takes the house, F you very much, thank you for your life's work.

Doesnt seem fair.

All of you are nuts, man I don't wish anyone to loose their lively hood unless you have it coming to you and your a rotten prick. I'm a white guy and all I can see is people want to work from all backgrounds and walks of life, it's always government to blame for keeping people down and that is a global issue. If I was was Indian or from China I'd go where I am valued and paid , go to the land of opportunities , well looks like the GM land of opportunity is dryied up. All of you guys are good people when it comes down to it be professional because the pig that sits up in her ivory tower is having a field day at all of the infighting going on as her steady stream of cash flow comes in. Form a union and stick together before all of your jobs are sent to China and India then guess what ! You won't need worry about the H1B1 because they will be back home working for GM there.

So you admit your not from here and taking US jobs from good citizens.

Why didn't you stay in your country, wasn't it good enough for you to be the good citizen your father taught you to be.

BTW nothing about racism again - nationalist comment.

The majority of people that immigrate to the US are not caucasion. Saying GM should fire people not from the US is a racially charged statement. You can try to play it off as being a "nativist" or nationislm but since you are "hoping" I get laid off you obvoiusly have a lot of hate wishing bad upon people particularly when they are not from the same place as you. Arguing with a few salty guys that got laid off got me here but I don't wish bad on anyone and while not perfect Mary Barra deserves more credit then she is getting. People quickly forget Trump's steel and aluminum tarrifs hurt the company.

Ah the one size fits all comment of racism.

That would lead me to believe you are not very old and use whichever phrase represents power to you. Racism is an action against another individual based on race difference. It really isn't the one size fits all counter on anything today.

I believe the persons preceding comments from another country would be nationalist. As they were speaking about geography. It's sort of like saying, "Buy made in America" - that isn't racist but stating where your preference of product origin is from.

Still laughing at your attempt to put meaning in your reply.

Hoping GM finds out who you are and terminates you along with Mary Barra.

I know plenty of people who were laid off in the embedded software area.

Interesting how I get criticized for simply suggesting ME's expand their skill sets to avoid being laid off in a world were everything is being computerized. Also interesting how you refuse to criticize the person that said people not from the US should be fired. I think you need to look in the mirror and ask yourself how racist do you feel like being today.

The statement on Mechanical Engineers was really unprofessional. Anyone that thinks the future is 100% electrical is being foolish. Think about it, can a programmer or an electrical engineer design and build anything on a car that is mechanical? They have been trained in another world. When it comes to designing and building anything mechanical on a vehicle we are the people to call. I am a very good mechanical engineer with over twenty years of experience and would never find myself being unprofessional towards other engineering degrees.

The person selling hate and fear in this post should go to the mirror take a look at themselves then tell the person they see, "Shame on you, you are a fool."

I am in the same boat. Tired of hearing how great the economy is and how many jobs are available. Yes, there are jobs...that pay $15/hr. I know people from the Global Service Desk who were let go on April 30th last year and they still can't find a job.

I am from the US. Just not from this boring state of Michigan full of ignorant and racist people like yourself.

If there are no engineering jobs, move to something completely different. I'm 50 now, I know my days are numbered. I don't expect to have my corporate job that much longer, the writing is on the wall. One thing is for sure, I'm not going to keep beating on doors when there is no chance of someone answering. I'll bartend, paint, landscape or drive a truck! Keep the money flowing to your investments and reduce your cost. Hell become a handyman. You are an engineer, figure it out!!

I’m 55 years old. I’ve interviewed for 2 admin assistant jobs, told I was over qualified. Depressed, angry & trying to keep my chin up.

The person who took the shot on Mechanical Engineers, definitely is not from US. Also could never put engineer me, only thing he wins with is have more hot air. Hope that person loses job soon as a result of karma.

Fire embedded controls software team not from US jerks asap, and their manager as they are accountable for this job national garbage rhetoric.

@YHXxIXg-jrp similar experience boss hole repeatedly blocked my transfer requests to new areas. I was “too valuable” in my current position-until suddenly I wasn’t and was being escorted out the door.

It doesn't matter how skilled you are or what you have done in the past, if you are over 50 there is a target on your back. Companies have embraced the spoken business practice of shedding older workers for new hires who will in turn be shed once they are no longer useful.

I wanted to move to electrification so that I could advance in new tech but my boss refused to release me from the position I had last summer , little did he or anyone know I would be unemployed five months latter. I knew the direction of EV years ago but was blocked , this would have helped me advance my knowledge base and further my career , all it takes is that one a--hole boss to hold a person back. There is your answer.

Sell your house and move to Alabama where the cost of living is low and the people support their President.

I feel for you but I'm also not sure it makes sense to take 25 years to pay off a mortgage for a house in Michigan. Especially since property values in Michigan were way lower 25 years ago....

Are you guys mechanical engineers? Do you not read the news and recognize the entire world is being computerized? GM has great tuition reimbursement programs. Could you not have started a second degree in comp sci or electrical engineering while still working? Keeping up to date with technical skills is how you avoid getting laid off, even in your 40's and 50's. Not a single person on my embedded controls software team was laid off.
