Chevron Managers

I usually take two hour lunches to work out and run errands but I still get my work done during normal business hours. Does Chevron frown on employees working out at lunch or taking long lunches in general? Are most CVX managers clock watchers?

If you are lucky enough to get a job with Chevron, don't squander it. Be on your best behavior. You are the outsider on probation. If CVX is slow, they will see you as a threat to their jobs. Word about your attitude and work ethic will spread and you will be cut.. If you are not busy, look busy and spend your time learning the Chevron business. CVX is not just upstream but a major integrated oil co with retail gas stations and a not-just-imaginary LNG project. Most of us want be so lucky.

I always check my supervisor and managers calendars to see their schedules. When I notice they’ll be away from the office, I plan my own schedule to have long lunch hours away from the office. It works great and I’ve never been called in for any reprimands.

Plus, obviously there is covert video surveillance everywhere. There is more video data than seismic data in APC

If you have a system with swipe access for floors and lifts, the software can build up a pretty good picture of your movements. If your vehicle has a dongle or chip for parking garage access that adds extra info. In the past, some people in APC have been warned for time abuse based on reports generated from swipe cards. It's not fiction.

I leave music on in my office so the listening devices pick it up and the HR police think I’m there day and night. I sometimes leave a cot on my floor so my boss thinks I’ve taken a short break to catch a brief nap before I return to productivity. I always answer emails within a minute of receiving, regardless of the time.

@1hsw, I have a pet hamster in a small cage that I keep under my desk at work. When I plan to take long hours away from the office, I cover my keyboard with Serán wrap and place it on the floor of the cage and let my hamster run around half the day. I often get praised for my dedication to working through lunch and getting the work done. Last year I received a promotion for my work and setting a good example.

There is no badging out at Chevron. No way to properly track such a thing...

@YEbWS0U-1hsw Every employer I have worked at makes you badge in but not out. How can they use that when they don't know what time you left for lunch (from badges alone)? The only time they could use it is if you show up to work late. I guess they could count the many times you go to the restroom, but that would be petty. There's also the problem of piggybacking. I can't count the number of times someone didn't badge in because the person in front of them did (or someone was exiting at the same time they were entering). Where I work using the card access system was tried and quickly found to be too impractical.

You may need to be aware that in any building with a swipe card access system, all your movements are logged. Custom reports are generated of hours in work, time spent on lunch breaks, etc., which can be used to target underperforming employees. The idea that your supervisor 'watches the clock' is ludicrous in any building with an access control system.

2 hour lunches? Half the organization is idle due to lack of work/projects to do. I was essentially absent from work for 6 months before I finally got bored enough and left to another company where people actually work. If you just want to coast along for the duration of your career then CVX is the place! I can't blame you.

My Chevron supervisor and manager never notice my two hour lunch breaks. Both of them take 3 hour absences every day, so my time is never noticed.

I work for a different employer and two hour lunches are commonplace. When I first started ten years ago, I adhered by the book and took my 30 minute lunch. Then little by little my lunch got longer and longer. Today I try to get back within two hours but there's still days that I don't quite get back within that two hour time frame. I figure, everyone else is doing it. Sadly, I am one of the best employees by far, so if they get me, they should get everyone else.

Depends on the supervisor. In my eleven years of experience with several supervisors none of them cared as long as I got my work done. You might not be able to do your errands downtown though. That office in the woodlands will be empty within a year.

You only took two hour lunches? Overachiever. You're making the rest of us look bad.

Two hour lunches? When is the massage and coffee break? Mid-morning or immediately after lunch?

I could get more work done if I took only half an hour but then I'd have to run my errands and work out during personal time, which doesn't sound too appealing.

Chevron managers are not obsessive clock watchers, but I would very strongly advise against taking 2 hour lunches. The usual 1 hour lunch break is the norm over there. The work schedule is 9 days/80 hours, so every other Friday is a no work day. The work environment can be very political and someone will rat you out.

Could you get more work done if you took a half hour lunch?
