Thread regarding AIG (American Intl Group Inc.) layoffs

This is ridiculous

Attrition at our team has been really bad, we have people leaving all the time. But what's making the bad situation worse is the replacements we are getting - when we get them. These people have no idea how to do the job they were hired to do. They are usually fresh out of college with little to no interest to learn.

Is this how low we've fallen? Are those the only people who are applying for jobs at AIG nowadays?

AIG = All India Group. Priceless, kudos to whomever thought that up. Here's the best part. AIG is highly restricted from setting up business in India, so we can't even do much in that market.

Instead of Shaq, let's have Aladdin sell the General's insurance.

Why would a young person even want to work at a sinking ship like AIG in an economy like this? I certainly wouldn't recommend AIG based on how they treat their employees. I know many AIG alumni and every single one would not want to go back there. Ever.

My manager (IT) who is non-technical always asks for any why work that I assign to experienced team members cannot be assigned to interns...:-) He drinks the same kool-aid as the folks who believe interns can replace experienced workers.

The company lacks a culture and a creed. Due to the RIFs that have gone on for many years, anyone can be replaced and the company will fumble along.....

There are systems broken that we need for business and reporting purposes and they aren't being addressed in a timely manner. Our Customers...Insureds' are the ones that are suffering and are realizing that we are broken. So the fix for that is that they will take their business else where. Wouldn't you.

Y4KvBqz-vgn- Well Said. The incompetence has permeated everywhere. A few of us folks were told you know what your longevity in the company is good without learning new stuff when we were pushing for a better way of doing things. Excel seems to rule the roost and any attempt on modernizing even at your own time is scorned at. This is the second straight year one of our modest innovation was scorned at mainly because some English troll would lose their control and team. effing mo--ns do not even want to come into the age of steam locomotives forget rocket age. they all want to kick rocks and live in wild age. On the flip side whenever IT was provided money they just lapped it up bland nothing because the middle management is so far up their asses that they would rather milk the money than delivering. God save the sinking ship

well said Y4KvBqz-vgn that has been exactly my experience summed up perfectly. The older managers like to sit around and talk all day about the good old days and don't want to make any changes or improvements to existing apps (the motto is if it isn't broken leave it alone) while the rest of us are twiddling our thumbs wondering how to get through the 8 hour day

Actually if you’re at the end of your career and need a few more year AIG will most likely burn you. Unless you’re in tight with the right folks.

Lol yeah new hires are smart to look elsewhere. I even heard my manager during a huddle mention he didn't want to hire a candidate because he was a computer science major and sounded like he had some other offers on the table... so you don't wanna try to hire a comp. Science major, yet the company needs more competent programmers to eventually move up to the IT department. I personally just feel he was threatened by his academia...pathetic. He also happens to hate the fact that I do web design on the side by the way he rolls his eyes when people ask me about it.

I agree. In fact it could hurt you unless you’re at the end of your career and need a few more years. And everything else said - right on!

sorry but I absolutely don't think AIG caters to older employees I think the manager's cater to their friends and their buddies however that is said that you feel underdeveloped and I wouldn't blame you I wouldn't give them a minute's notice either as they seem to love to ambush people to lay them off and say you've got one minute to go get your pocketbook and leave I see a lot of new hires turning down job offers they don't want to come here they don't want the insecurity the low pay the under development they just don't want the problems that come with working here its not an opportunity it's too risky you're not going to get any knowledge

Sounds like my manager who laid me off. I wasn’t one of the click I got to the party late and he inherited me after my first boss got fired. He got laid off too but only after they made sure the timing maximized his benefits. Young and old it seems the same !

In fairness to younger employees ( I am one ), is that AIG is not really moving with the times. I would love to learn, but it seems my manager would rather the most technically capable employees sit around and do nothing while he caters to the AIG lifers. It's as if he doesn't want to acknowledge that he may actually have to step his game up and match the knowledge of his slightly younger counterparts. So what does he do? Hides in his cubicle, eats food - thus getting lazy and tired, and walks around b---s---ting with select employees instead of developing and engaging the employees who he deemes as a flight risk, when the reality is that his attitude is the exact reason FOR the flight risks. I'm sure my story is similar to many others' because, let's face it, AIG promotes unintelligent employees into middle managers who enjoy stonewalling potential talent so that their own deminishing skillset isn't blaringly obvious. Whatever, don't expect a 2 weeks notice from me. Don't even expect a 2 minutes notice as "leadership" isn't even willing to spare 2 hours of training a week.

AIG is falling even lower, I spend so much time trying to understand people on conference calls. The jobs going overseas is very obvious. I guess I will need to move overseas to get a job.

So sad that the older employees have been targeted. Thanks to this site maybe something can be done about it.

Out with the old. In with the new. AIG's plan to RIF older workers through Age Discrimination is a blueprint for disaster. You need an experienced workforce to operate a company efficiently. The shortsighted 175 Water St Execs only care about the $. The 1st Quarter ends in 2 weeks and RIF week is next week. I wonder what BD will come up with on the conference call in May. Copy and Paste the Last One?

the college kids are the only people that AIG seems to be courting but from what I hear even the new hires are turning jobs down at AIG in favor of other companies because we don't want to pay them
