Thread regarding Seagate Technology Inc. layoffs

Seagate's Layoff process

These upcoming layoffs will be my first experience of layoffs, (yes, this means I am new to Seagate).

What is the usual process and how long does it take? Is it a long drawn out process that can happen to anyone at anytime over the next few months? Or will a bunch of boxes show up one Friday to layoff everyone at once? Are they done in batches by groups/products? Will it start before or after the CEO officially announces them to the shareholders?

I was with seagate for a couple of months before i was shown to the door due to "re-structuring"

I had packed all my stuff even before the hearsay lay-off rounds got in, on the day itself just awaiting managers' name calling and went in smiling to the manager (as i was mentally prepared) and get my package while already looking for a new job prior to that. Garden leave was the best with 'paid holiday' while i starting going interviews. Luckily my new job start date was the exact day the garden leave ends =)

always be prepared if you are working in seagate. Love the job but don't love the company, because you wont know when the company wont love you

Good Luck !

After going through about 10 or 12 of these corporate musical chairs parties at NRM, they tend to follow a standard process.

6 months out - Wild@ss speculation nothing worth worrying about

1 to 2 months out - Local laws may require public notice depending on size. Only VP’s and some directors will have full details. Package details may be announced.

1 to 4 weeks out - lots of meetings working out percentages and departments for the cuts.

Final day is sometimes announce ahead of time and sometimes not.

Those that get the cut are generally notified in the morning, and from my experience at NRM are given the the rest of the day to clean out personal items and say good byes.

Each time can be different and your results may vary.

Good Luck and Go Vikes!

PS Haven’t even heard what I would consider a “Bad Rumor” yet.

This brings up a very good point. Have your stuff in your office prepared so you can grab and go. You also won't have time to pull personal or ah..other stuff you may want off of your work computer. If you back up stuff on say a thumb drive every month and keep it at home who would even know? Something to think about. Be smart and prepared. Nobody at STX is going to care about you except you after you are marched out.

The most recent process has been targeted, hitting one at a time and can take place on any day of the week. For the last 6 months they have not done the big one day layoff events. The big layoffs wind up in the newspapers and all over on line because of its size and state reporting requirements. Also, the big layoffs get cool code names that every one finds out about.

All of this has created the illusion that layoffs are not going on but they are!

To answer your question succinctly - STX has done big layoffs every 6 months for 7 or 8 years, now you can be asked to leave at any time, and here is a box and 30 minutes to clear out your office, and do the shame walk with an escort out of the building without saying bye to your friends.

Clean out your office now because you will not be in a good frame of mind when the day comes.

If past history is a guide, you will get NO PRIOR NOTICE until you are suddenly scheduled to meet with your boss one day out of the blue. Then, you will be informed that your contract is being terminated and you have 1 hour to say goodbyes and collect your things before you are literally frog marched out of the building and locked out until you come back for your exit interview and get severance package details. It wasn't always like that. Site closures may be different too. So, that must be why this site has 1000's of people trying to find out what's going on. LOL

I wouldn't pay attention to anything on this site because there's no standard method. While some are bigger than others, the layoffs are constant and the only way you find out someone has been let go is through the rumor mill (Unless they sit close to you).
