Go back and watch one of Chuck's first Town Halls. If memory serves, he stated that "...at Visa, we had 15k employees bringing in the same amount of business dollar-wise as BNYM. Here, we have 50k people..." And right there, I knew.

1/3 is not an insane amount to lay off if they are getting ready to be bought by a bigger company. There will be huge numbers of duplicate jobs to cut too, after the merger.
Right now it’s about looking good $$ on paper for the merger.
